These Scriptures proclaim: Isaiah would suffer
and call upon the Lord for help. Jesus speaks of
his own suffering and death and of the demands
of discipleship. What use is faith, to confess that
Jesus is the Christ without works of love?

23rd SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Many people did not want to hear the words of Jesus, but the deaf-mute, perhaps a symbol of the Gentiles, wanted to hear and speak. He was brought by friends who also had faith in Jesus’ healing power. Jesus touched the man’s ears and anointed his tongue with spittle. Looking toward heaven, Jesus commanded that the man’s ears be open. At the same time, the man’s tongue was free and he began to talk. Mark’s gospel frequently has Jesus telling those cured not to say anything about what has happened, but many of the people, including those who witnessed this miracle, could not keep the news to themselves.
Reflection: This gospel shows us the importance of keeping ourselves open to God’s will. We may look at the many things we own that help make our lives easier and more comfortable. But, only when we consider the difficulties of one who lives with a handicap, do we realize that value of what we might otherwise take for granted. Our ability to pen our ears and move our tongues may help us communicate easily, but there is more in the message of today’s gospel. How open are we to hearing and sharing the Good News of Jesus? Do we worship and pray regularly with our family? Do we give witness to the Good News at school, work, in the neighborhood and community?
PASTOR’S DESK
BISHOP CARL MOEDDEL
It was with sadness that we learned on August 25 of the death of Bishop Moeddel.
He was ordained a bishop in 1993 and served as Archbishop Pilarczyk’s auxiliary until retiring in 2007 because of ill health. During his years as auxiliary bishop, he visited St. Vincent Ferrer several times to celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation. His last visit here was in April 2004.
“Bishop Carl” served the Lord well in all the different leadership roles that he was given. Above all, he was a very pastoral priest and bishop deeply interested in and concerned about the parishioners and people that he encountered. His contagious smile and engaging manner were outward signs of the joyful spirit with which he loved the Lord and God’s people – the Church. Well done good and faithful servant!
COMING IN THE MAIL
In September every parish household will receive in the mail a copy of the Annual Parish Financial Report for 2008-2009. This Report presents details of all income and expenses for the fiscal year that started July 1, 2008 and ended June 30, 2009. Please take a moment to read through the Report, and the letter from Fr. George that comes with it. If you have any questions about the Report, please call Fr. George, or Marc Greenberg, our Business Manager, at 791-9030.
Along with the Annual Report, Fr. George has included a letter and a white parish envelope appealing for donations to the St. Vincent Ferrer STAR Fund. This fund provides tuition assistance to parish families who want their children to have a Catholic education, but who cannot afford the full tuition to send their children to our parish school. Because of the current economy, there has been an increase in applications for tuition assistance from SVF parish families that have experienced job or income loss. Please consider a generous donation to help families in need keep their children in our school.
LABOR DAY
Our parish Mass on Monday September 7th, at 9:00 a.m. (in Church) will be an opportunity to ask God to bless our work and to help and guide those who are unemployed. There will be no Solemn Exposition on Monday, September 7th and all Parish Offices will be closed.
REMEMBERING SEPTEMBER 11
Let us keep the victims of terrorism and their families in our prayers. Our “Prayer for Peace” at Mass at St. Vincent’s is a daily reminder to work and pray for peace and justice, in our homes, country and the world.
WEEKDAY MASS
7:30 AM ON FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 11
St. Xavier High School has invited Doug Alpiger, our School Principal, Kara Feltrup, who helps with our Youth Ministry and Fr. George Kunkel to attend their opening school Mass on Friday, September 11th. Therefore, the morning Mass will be at 7:30 a.m. on September 11, here at St. Vincent Ferrer. The rosary will be prayed after Mass.
-Fr. George Kunkel
VOCATION VIEW
Ask God to open your ears to hear his call. May he also free your tongue to proclaim the good news. Consider serving God as a priest, brother, or sister. (Mark 7:31-37)
YEAR FOR PRIESTS

FAITH FORMATION
CATECHETICAL SUNDAY
Sunday, September 13th, at the 10:30 AM Mass, St. Vincent Ferrer will celebrate Catechetical Sunday. The theme of our celebration is “We can do small things for one another with great love” Mother Teresa. During our Eucharistic celebration, our parish catechists will be commissioned. We will also recognize the role parents and guardians play in handing on the faith to the children and youth in our parish. Take a minute and thank our catechists for all they do to share the light of faith with our children, youth, and adults.
Coffee & donuts will be served after the 10:30 Mass at a reception in their honor. We hope you can join us.
