Stewardship Sunday
25th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Jesus continued to try to help the disciples understand what was in store for him, but they couldn't see it. As a matter of fact, so great was their misunderstanding that they argued among themselves about who would be first in this kingdom of Jesus. Patiently, Jesus tried again to explain. Gathering in a small child, he told the disciples that anyone entering the Kingdom of God must enter it as a child. Children in the time of Jesus had no identity, no legal rights, and were basically “non-people”. In order to be first in the Kingdom Jesus promised, the disciples (and all who follow them) must be as unimportant as a child in the eyes of society.
Reflection: It may be difficult for parents of our time to think of children as “non-persons”. They are probably the most important people in our lives! Parents in ancient times loved their children just as parents do today. While children in our time are protected by many laws, still very few children carry any authority or power in our culture. So the difference is not in children and parents of two different times, rather the point is how children are unencumbered by status. Their love for God is fresh and uncomplicated. This is a quality in children we should consciously observe and emulate.
PASTOR’S DESK
STEWARDSHIP SUNDAY
Fr. George Kunkel will preach at all the Masses on September 26 & 27 in connection with Stewardship Sunday. Those not actively involved in parish activities will be invited to “step up to the plate” by signing the 2009-2010 Ministries of Service form. Stewardship is gratitude in action; by sharing what we have (time, talent, treasure), we acknowledge our own dependence on the Lord, our indebtedness to His goodness, our awareness of His kindness and our call to serve as agents of His care of others.
COMING IN THE MAIL
In September every parish household will receive in the mail a copy of the Annual Parish Financial Report for 2008-2009. This Report presents details of all income and expenses for the fiscal year that started July 1, 2008 and ended June 30, 2009. Please take a moment to read through the Report, and the letter from Fr. George that comes with it. If you have any questions about the Report, please call Fr. George, or Marc Greenberg, our Business Manager, at 791-9030.
Along with the Annual Report, Fr. George has included a letter and a white parish envelope appealing for donations to the St. Vincent Ferrer STAR Fund. This fund provides tuition assistance to parish families who want their children to have a Catholic education, but who cannot afford the full tuition to send their children to our parish school. Because of the current economy, there has been an increase in applications for tuition assistance from SVF parish families that have experienced job or income loss. Please consider a generous donation to help families in need keep their children in our school.
RETREAT
I will be on retreat the week of September 28-October 2. I will be at St. Meinrad Archabbey in Indiana. During the days that I am away, a Communion Service will be held at 8:30 a.m. in the Chapel, on Wednesday, September 30, Fr. Michael Davis will celebrate Mass in Church.
Please pray for me – and each of you and the intentions of our parish will be in my prayers as I spend several days on Retreat.
-Fr. George Kunkel

New SVF Witness for Life Ministry
As Catholics, we believe that human life is sacred and that the dignity of the human person is the foundation of a moral vision for society. Our Church teaches that the role of government and other institutions is to protect human life and human dignity and promote the common good.
We are looking for people who are interested in social outreach and action and want to promote SVF participation in community and national events related to protection of human life and dignity. Members of this ministry will work together to provide visibility to upcoming opportunities for parish involvement and will help coordinate volunteer participation. If you are interested, please contact Chris Homan at 607-5996 for more information.

Important Info for ALL Parish Cub Scouts:
Interested in Earning a Catholic Religious Emblem This Year?
If you have a son in 1st-5th grade who is a member of a Cub Scout Pack in our community and have wondered about pursuing the Catholic Religious Emblems for Cub Scouts, we can help! There are two emblems offered for Catholic Cub Scouts:
“Light of Christ” for Tiger Cubs/1st grade or Wolf Scouts/2nd grade. (2nd grade recommended)
“Parvuli Dei” (“Children of God”) for Bear Scouts/3rd grade or Webelos/4th and 5th grades. (4th or 5th grade recommended)
Both programs involve the Scout completing a 5-section activity booklet with the guidance and assistance of his parent(s). Although the program can be completed in 4-6 hours, it is suggested that the steps be spread over several weeks, with families spending 20-30 minutes at a time on the activities. When completed, the Scout reviews the booklet with Fr. George, who signs the application form.
