24th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

At the point of today’s reading in Mark’s Gospel, Jesus begins his journey to the cross and resurrection.  It is clear that the disciples finally understand that Jesus is the messiah, but they still see this role as one of royal earthly glory.  When Jesus corrects this image and explains that the Son of man must suffer rejection and death, Peter takes Jesus aside.  Peter can’t believe such things could happen to someone destined to greatness and argues with Jesus.  Jesus knows these things must happen and tells Peter to get behind him and follow.  To follow, Peter, the disciples, and all who have come after them, must suffer as a servant for God, putting others before themselves.

Reflection:  All parents want the very best for their children!  They willingly make sacrifices to provide the best opportunities for our children.  They might sacrifice a career to stay at home with their children, or they might take on an extra job to save for college tuition.  Parents often wish we could take the illness or discomfort from their children.  They cannot stand to see their children suffer.  Today’s Gospel cautions us to do that very thing.  Like parents, we must give of ourselves for others.  Remember, the best way to show each other how to live is by our example.

PASTOR’S DESK

A NOTE FROM THE ARCHBISHOP CONCERNING THE SWINE FLU

The Chancery Office and the Worship Office have received a number of phone calls regarding the Swine Flu and Mass.  At this time, our recommendation is as it has been in the past during flu season: to encourage parishioners/students to take precautions such as frequent washing of hands, remain at home if they are sick, refrain from drinking from the cup and from shaking hands at the Sign of Peace if they are not feeling well.  The Archdiocese will follow directives of the USCCB and local and federal health authorities and will keep parishes, agencies, schools, and institutions informed as the need arises.

STEWARDSHIP SUNDAY

Fr. George Kunkel will preach at all the Masses on September 26 & 27 in connection with Stewardship Sunday.  Those not actively involved in parish activities will be invited to “step up to the plate” by signing the 2009-2010 Ministries of Service form. Stewardship is gratitude in action; by sharing what we have (time, talent, treasure), we acknowledge our own dependence on the Lord, our indebtedness to His goodness, our awareness of His kindness and our call to serve as agents of His care of others.

COMING IN THE MAIL

In September every parish household will receive in the mail a copy of the Annual Parish Financial Report for 2008-2009.  This Report presents details of all income and expenses for the fiscal year that started July 1, 2008 and ended June 30, 2009.  Please take a moment to read through the Report, and the letter from Fr. George that comes with it.  If you have any questions about the Report, please call Fr. George, or Marc Greenberg, our Business Manager, at 791-9030.

Along with the Annual Report, Fr. George has included a letter and a white parish envelope appealing for donations to the St. Vincent Ferrer STAR Fund. This fund provides tuition assistance to parish families who want their children to have a Catholic education, but who cannot afford the full tuition to send their children to our parish school.  Because of the current economy, there has been an increase in applications for tuition assistance from SVF parish families that have experienced job or income loss.  Please consider a generous donation to help families in need keep their children in our school.

-Fr. George Kunkel

Important Info for ALL Parish Cub Scouts:

Interested in Earning a Catholic Religious Emblem This Year?

If you have a son in 1st-5th grade who is a member of a Cub Scout Pack in our community and have wondered about pursuing the Catholic Religious Emblems for Cub Scouts, we can help!  There are two emblems offered for Catholic Cub Scouts:

“Light of Christ” for Tiger Cubs/1st grade or Wolf Scouts/2nd grade. (2nd grade recommended)

“Parvuli Dei” (“Children of God”) for Bear Scouts/3rd grade or Webelos/4th and 5th grades. (4th or 5th grade recommended)

Both programs involve the Scout completing a 5-section activity booklet with the guidance and assistance of his parent(s).  Although the program can be completed in 4-6 hours, it is suggested that the steps be spread over several weeks, with families spending 20-30 minutes at a time on the activities.  When completed, the Scout reviews the booklet with Fr. George, who signs the application form.

Now is the time to start!!

·         To earn the emblem in time for your Pack’s Blue & Gold banquet (typically in February), the book needs to be completed and reviewed with Fr. George by mid-January.

·         Also, the older boys who earn the Parvuli Dei emblem have the opportunity to receive it at a special Sunday afternoon service at the Cathedral in late January.  To participate in the January 24, 2010 ceremony, the book needs to be completed and reviewed with Fr. George by mid-December.

·         All parish Cub Scouts who earn a religious emblem during the year will also be recognized during St. Vincent’s annual “Scout Saturday” 5pm Mass in May.

If your Cub Scout would like to work on either the Light of Christ or Parvuli Dei emblem this year, please contact SVF’s Religious Emblem Coordinator, Jamie Eifert, at 563-7866 or jke84nd@aol.com.
