19th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

The people who came to listen to Jesus were still thinking literally.  They did not understand what Jesus meant when he said he had come down from heaven. They wondered how this could be when they knew Jesus’ parents.  As in last week’s gospel, Jesus tried again to explain that the bread he offered was not to fill the hunger just for one day, but it was a bread that would give the people everlasting life.

Reflection:  Think of the many ways God feeds you and your family.  We are fed with friendship, kindness, joy, health, care, love and many more ways that you may think of.  When we receive the Eucharist, we give thanks for these gifts.  What are some ways you share these gifts with others?  Are there new ways you can think of?

PASTOR’S DESK

FEAST OF THE ASSUMPTION - SATURDAY, AUGUST 15

The National Conference of Catholic Bishops has removed the obligation to attend Mass on this Holy Day when it falls on a Saturday.  We will honor Mary on this beautiful feast day with a special Mass at 8:30 am in Church.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR

A blessing will be given to Mr. Douglas Alpiger, St. Vincent Ferrer School principal, during the 10:30 a.m. Mass on August 16th.  Join us for donuts and coffee in Hamilton Hall after Mass. Let us give our new principal a warm SVF welcome.

LECTORS SCHEDULE

The Lectors’ new schedule for September, October and November – We are about to put together the next quarterly schedule for lectors.  Any questions or concerns regarding the new schedule should be directed to Susan Aloisio, 745-9181 or smaloisio@fuse.net by Monday, August 10th.

WOMEN AND SPIRIT:

CATHOLIC SISTERS IN AMERICA

Fr. George Kunkel  - recommends taking time out to see this exhibit.  Mark your summer calendar now to visit the Women and Spirit: Catholic Sisters in America exhibit now open at the Cincinnati Museum Center (old Union Terminal).  This national traveling exhibit chronicles the extensive history and impact Sisters have had on American society.  A truly inspirational and uplifting event, the exhibit runs through August 30.

GIFTS OF STOCK TO SVF

Its now easier than ever to donate stock to our parish.  As of July 1, 2009, St. Vincent Ferrer Parish has its own stock account at Fifth Third Bank.  In the past, donations of stock had to be sold through the Archdiocese.  It sometimes took weeks before we received any funds.  Now the parish can receive stock directly, and Fifth Third will sell the stock and send us the funds all within a few business days.  Please call Marc Greenberg, our Business Manager, for details on using our new stock account.  If you have made stock donations in the past, please call Marc to receive new broker instructions.

STAFF DAY OF REFLECTION

All parish offices will close on August 11 at 9:45 a.m. so all parish and staff members can attend a day of reflection in Hamilton Hall.

-Fr. George Kunkel

VOCATION VIEW

Jesus continues to draw those who believe.  Our world is hungry and thirsty for the Bread of Life.  Consider sharing your faith.  Consider ministry in the Church.  (John 6:41-51)

YEAR FOR PRIESTS

 Sunday             Fr. John Bensman

 Monday             Fr. Erwin Bertke

 Tuesday            Fr. Michael Bidwell

 Wednesday       Fr. Joseph Binzer

TAKE OUT – Family Faith on the Go

Faith and Fun All Summer Long

Parents, don’t forget to look over the handout that you received.  Keep it close at hand this summer as a faith sharing resource.

August 9th  ~ 19h Sunday of Ordinary Time

For this week’s reflection … in today’s Gospel, Jesus says, “I am the Bread of Life…”  In coming together at Mass we are privileged to share the “Bread of Life.”  As a family, take time today to talk about how going to Mass can make a difference in your everyday life.  How do you share Jesus’ life among those in your family? -among friends and neighbors? - among strangers you meet?  Which is easier?  Why do you think that group is easier to share Jesus’ life?

In addition to “TAKE OUT”…

There are also copies in the back of Church of In Focus Summer Sundays - Fun under the Catholic Sun.  Please pick up your family’s copy.  This year, make the Sabbath a day of genuine rest and recreation by recalling old traditions and creating a few new ones as well.  Let your imagination and creativity increase your faith … and enjoy the lazy, hazy days of summer Sundays while you’re at it.
