22nd SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

The religious leaders criticized some of the Jesus' disciples claiming that they did not wash their hands before eating. The ritual was intended to give special care to food offered to God as opposed to “regular” or common food of the general population. Jesus pointed out to these leaders that they had lost sight of the purpose of the law and had become totally consumed by following the law for the sake of following the law. He continued making his point by explaining that nothing that goes into a person can make that person evil. It is what comes from the person, specifically what is in his/her heart that makes the person sinful.

Reflection:  A story passed on by a Native American father to his son described the torment of two wolves living inside the father's head. One wolf was evil and vicious. The other was kind and loving. When the son questioned his father about which wolf reacted in certain circumstances, the father explained that it was whichever wolf he fed. How often do we feed the wolves in our heads by letting anger, prejudices, and jealousies grow unchecked? One of the greatest things we can do for ourselves and for our children is to help them (and ourselves) put the hurtful things in our lives on the table so that they can be dealt with openly and honestly. That is the only way true healing can take place. Most often we are able to help one another in this action, but sometimes we need to recognize the need for an objective, third party to get involved.

PASTOR’S DESK

COMING IN THE MAIL

In September every parish household will receive in the mail a copy of the Annual Parish Financial Report for 2008-2009.  This Report presents details of all income and expenses for the fiscal year that started July 1, 2008 and ended June 30, 2009.  Please take a moment to read through the Report, and the letter from Fr. George that comes with it.  If you have any questions about the Report, please call Fr. George, or Marc Greenberg, our Business Manager, at 791-9030.

Along with the Annual Report, Fr. George has included a letter and a white parish envelope appealing for donations to the St. Vincent Ferrer STAR Fund. This fund provides tuition assistance to parish families who want their children to have a Catholic education, but who cannot afford the full tuition to send their children to our parish school.  Because of the current economy, there has been an increase in applications for tuition assistance from SVF parish families that have experienced job or income loss.  Please consider a generous donation to help families in need keep their children in our school.

2009-2010 Early Childhood - Due to the unusually low enrollment of 3, 4, and 5 year-olds, and the lack of adults able to commit to teaching in the program, Early Childhood will be suspended this year.  In mid-fall we will begin a process to consider how we can best serve the needs of our young families.

TAKE OUT – Family Faith on the Go

Faith and Fun All Summer Long

Parents, don’t forget to look over the handout that you received.  Keep it close at hand this summer as a faith sharing resource.

~ FINAL WEEK OF SUMMER TAKE OUT  ~

August 30th ~ 22nd Sunday of Ordinary Time

For this week’s reflection … initially, today’s reading sounds negative.  If you take another look what is the real intent of this passage?  Is Jesus not asking us to focus on what is really important? … that is, his desire to be with us, to love us unconditionally.  The question for today might be:  If Jesus has loved us enough to give his life for us, what can I (we) do in return?

CATECHETICAL SUNDAY

Sunday, September 13th, at the 10:30 AM Mass, St. Vincent Ferrer will celebrate Catechetical Sunday.  The theme of our celebration is “We can do small things for one another with great love” Mother Teresa.  During our Eucharistic celebration, our parish catechists will be commissioned.  We will also recognize the role parents and guardians play in handing on the faith to the children and youth in our parish.  Take a minute and thank our catechists for all they do to share the light of faith with our children, youth, and adults.

Coffee & donuts will be served after the 10:30 Mass at a reception in their honor.  We hope you can join us.

SCHOOL NOTES…

Since my hire as the new Saint Vincent Ferrer School principal, I am often astonished at the level of commitment, pride and love members of this family so candidly express. In my doctoral studies, these past several years, I have focused my research on those “elements” of excellence schools. Much like the approach, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People has taken; educators have identified elements of excellent schools. Of these essentials, the most influential are: engaging instruction from caring, knowledgeable teachers, a safe, positive environment and a high level of parent and community participation. As I continue to meet our parents, students, staff and parish members I find myself checking-off elements. Getting to know Saint Vincent is like going through a check list for school excellence. During this past week of working closely with our teachers it is evident their compassion for young people and commitment to a positive school experience. The relationship with parents and the community is a partnership of service focused on students’ growth and enrichment.

I am blessed to be the new steward of Saint Vincent Ferrer School and will focus my energy and prayer building on its tradition of excellence. We will continue to provide excellent instruction in a safe, positive, faith-based environment while fostering nurturing relationships with students, parents and community.

Peace,

Douglas L. Alpiger
