for the journey, God provides Elijah with cake

and water, reminiscent of his ancestors’ Pasch.

Thus he experiences the goodness of the Lord.

Jesus, the bread of life, strengthens us for our

18th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Following the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes, people were very excited about Jesus. Many of them recognized the presence of God in the miracles of Jesus, but they still thought in earthly ideas of bread. They followed Jesus hoping to see more signs. Jesus reminded the people about the bread God provided through Moses when the Israelites were lost in the wilderness. He explained that was only bread to satisfy a temporary hunger, but the bread God sent in Jesus would satisfy their hunger forever.

Reflection:  We spend a great deal of our resources (time, energy, money) providing bread for our family. We know, of course, that “bread” is figurative for housing, clothing, food, fine arts lessons, sports instruction, vacations and camps. We are challenged by this gospel today to spend at least an equal amount of our resources helping others recognize Jesus as the true bread from heaven. Consider sincerely how you might meet the challenge of this gospel.

WOMEN AND SPIRIT:

CATHOLIC SISTERS IN AMERICA

Fr. George Kunkel  - recommends taking time out to see this exhibit.  Mark your summer calendar now to visit the Women and Spirit: Catholic Sisters in America exhibit now open at the Cincinnati Museum Center (old Union Terminal).  This national traveling exhibit chronicles the extensive history and impact Sisters have had on American society.  A truly inspirational and uplifting event, the exhibit runs through August 30.

GIFTS OF STOCK TO SVF

Its now easier than ever to donate stock to our parish.  As of July 1, 2009, St. Vincent Ferrer Parish has its own stock account at Fifth Third Bank.  In the past, donations of stock had to be sold through the Archdiocese.  It sometimes took weeks before we received any funds.  Now the parish can receive stock directly, and Fifth Third will sell the stock and send us the funds all within a few business days.  Please call Marc Greenberg, our Business Manager, for details on using our new stock account.  If you have made stock donations in the past, please call Marc to receive new broker instructions.

Feast of St. John Vianney

(1859 - August 4 - 2009

The Year for Priests coincides with the 150th anniversary of the death of St. John Vianney.  He is known as the Cure’ of Ars and as such is the patron of all parish priests.  He was born of poor parents in Dardilly, France, in 1786.  He began his studies for the priesthood at the age of nineteen and only after many failures and difficulties was he ordained in 1815.

He was appointed pastor of the village of Ars where the Catholic faith had practically vanished.  Here he labored for the rest of his life gaining a worldwide reputation as a priest who practiced great penance, exercised a wondrous power in the confessional, and softened the hearts of sinners by his preaching.  St. John Vianney was canonized in 1929.

TAKE OUT – Family Faith on the Go

Faith and Fun All Summer Long

Parents, don’t forget to look over the handout that you received.  Keep it close at hand this summer as a faith sharing resource.

August 2nd  ~ 18h Sunday of Ordinary Time

For this week’s reflection … today we hear the continuation of last week’s Gospel.  Jesus tells us that He is the Bread of Life.

How has Jesus nourished you, or made a difference in your everyday life?

Spend some time talking about what this means for you as a family, and perhaps you can talk about this as you share a simple meal.

In addition to “TAKE OUT”…

There are also copies in the back of Church of In Focus Summer Sundays - Fun under the Catholic Sun.  Please pick up your family’s copy.  This year, make the Sabbath a day of genuine rest and recreation by recalling old traditions and creating a few new ones as well.  Let your imagination and creativity increase your faith … and enjoy the lazy, hazy days of summer Sundays while you’re at it.
