21st SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
It was very difficult for some of Jesus’ followers to hear the words of today’s gospel. Jesus pointed to himself as the one in whom God chose to reveal himself. But the people could not bring themselves to call Jesus by the titles they reserved for God alone. Jesus knew there would be those who would not believe, those who started to follow him but could not continue. It is clear from this gospel that we can’t fully understand all that Jesus said. It is only through faith that we continue to follow him.
Reflection: Are we the ones in today’s gospel who grumble, the ones with shallow faith who half-heartedly follow Jesus? Or, are we like the disciples who recognize Jesus as the one who offers us eternal life? It may be easy to be the latter when we speak to others, or when we know someone is watching us. The true test of our faith may be what we do to affirm one another in the ways to follow Jesus.
PASTOR’S DESK
COMING IN THE MAIL
In September every parish household will receive in the mail a copy of the Annual Parish Financial Report for 2008-2009. This Report presents details of all income and expenses for the fiscal year that started July 1, 2008 and ended June 30, 2009. Please take a moment to read through the Report, and the letter from Fr. George that comes with it. If you have any questions about the Report, please call Fr. George, or Marc Greenberg, our Business Manager, at 791-9030.
Along with the Annual Report, Fr. George has included a letter and a white parish envelope appealing for donations to the St. Vincent Ferrer STAR Fund. This fund provides tuition assistance to parish families who want their children to have a Catholic education, but who cannot afford the full tuition to send their children to our parish school. Because of the current economy, there has been an increase in applications for tuition assistance from SVF parish families that have experienced job or income loss. Please consider a generous donation to help families in need keep their children in our school.
ON SUNDAY (AUGUST 22 & 23) YOU CAN RECOMMEND RCIA CANDIDATES TO THE SVF COME AND SEE MEETING ON MONDAY, AUGUST 31 AT 7:00 P.M.

TAKE OUT – Family Faith on the Go
Faith and Fun All Summer Long
Parents, don’t forget to look over the handout that you received. Keep it close at hand this summer as a faith sharing resource.
August 23rd ~ 21st Sunday of Ordinary Time
For this week’s reflection … today’s reading, once again, is from the Gospel of John. Peter says to Jesus, “You have the words of everlasting life.” The disciples chose to follow Jesus. What in your life is an obstacle to following Jesus more fully? What do you need to change (as an individual, as a family) in order to be a more faithful follower?
In addition to “TAKE OUT”…
There are also copies in the back of Church of In Focus Summer Sundays - Fun under the Catholic Sun. Please pick up your family’s copy. This year, make the Sabbath a day of genuine rest and recreation by recalling old traditions and creating a few new ones as well. Let your imagination and creativity increase your faith … and enjoy the lazy, hazy days of summer Sundays while you’re at it.
