As much as Jesus’ listeners didn’t understand how Jesus could really mean that they were to eat his body and drink his blood, Jesus made it very clear that that was precisely what he did mean. Once again, it was hard for the people of Jesus’ day (and still hard for us today, too) to understand what Jesus tried to say because they only thought in earthly, literal terms. This gospel passage gives us one of our firm foundations for the institution of the Eucharist so that, in faith, we will eat the bread that will give us everlasting life.

Reflection: Many times we prepare ourselves for the “big” events in our lives forgetting how much of life takes place in the ordinary moments. For example, first communion is often a big production either at the hands of the parish or how families choose to dress their children and celebrate after Mass. The really important message of this gospel reading, however, is how joyful and thankful are we when we receive our one hundredth or one-thousandth communion. Our goal might be to help our children and others continue to be thankful and joyful each time we share in communion. This can happen when everyone sees how happy we are to receive communion ourselves.

During the Sunday Masses on August 22 & 23 you will have the opportunity to recommend a relative or parishioner to be invited to the SVF Come & See meeting on Monday, August 31 at 7:00 p.m. in Hamilton Hall.

New parish volunteers, who will be working with children this school year, or those who have not yet had a chance to be fingerprinted or taken the workshop, will have the opportunity to participate in the workshop here at St. Vincent’s on Thursday, September 3.

Fr. George Kunkel - recommends taking time out to see this exhibit. Mark your summer calendar now to visit the Women and Spirit: Catholic Sisters in America exhibit now open at the Cincinnati Museum Center (old Union Terminal). This national traveling exhibit chronicles the extensive history and impact Sisters have had on American society. A truly inspirational and uplifting event, the exhibit runs through August 30.

GIFTS OF STOCK TO SVF

Its now easier than ever to donate stock to our parish. As of July 1, 2009, St. Vincent Ferrer Parish has its own stock account at Fifth Third Bank. In the past, donations of stock had to be sold through the Archdiocese. It sometimes took weeks before we received any funds. Now the parish can receive stock directly, and Fifth Third will sell the stock and send us the funds all within a few business days. Please call Marc Greenberg, our Business Manager, for details on using our new stock account. If you have made stock donations in the past, please call Marc to receive new broker instructions.

Our communion with Jesus unites us with all believers. As you participate in the Eucharist pray that the Church may be strengthened as the Body of Christ. (John 6:41-51)

This year is an invitation to support, encourage and pray for all priests. Each week we will publish the names of 7 of our diocesan priests to pray for in particular. Hopefully by the end of the year we will have prayed for all of our priests and seminarians in a special way. This week's priests are:

ATTENTION! – Stop by the Parish Library in the Office of Faith Formation, located on the 2^nd floor of the Parish Center. Hours are 9:30 AM to 2:30 PM, Mondays through Thursdays. Book returns can be made at that time, or placed in the blue bin in the main hall.

Jeanne Hunt is a familiar name at SVF. She did our parish mission in 2007. She is a teacher and author, and has been a catechetical leader for 25 years.

It’s time to welcome back our SVF choir whose summer sabbatical has come to an end. Thank you to the SVF Contemporary group which sings year round every first, third and fifth Sunday at 10:30 Mass. Welcome also to the new choir accompanist Sherry McCamley whose music accomplishments are many!

CHOIR REHEARSALS BEGIN - Tuesday, Sept 15 at 7:30 p.m. We sing every second & fourth Sundays at 10:30 Mass beginning September 27^th. Our season runs September – May, depending on the liturgical calendar. We also sing special liturgies – i.e.: Christmas Eve, Mission & Holy Week. Please call Mary Lou for any information.

P.S. This is the Choir’s twenty-fourth year, seventeen years under the direction of Jim McCormick.

Thank you St Vincent parishioners for your continued and growing support. The scrip volunteers will be taking the summer off from selling gift cards after Mass. Even though we won’t be at the doors the gift cards will still be available.

There will be no August Social Justice meeting. The next meeting is scheduled for Monday, September 28 at 7:00 p.m. in room B.

Bringing your paper trash to the green and yellow bins next to the school, you are supporting SJ&O activities as well as helping the environment. We receive about $100 from Abitibi each month that we then use to sponsor mission work and to help support SVF projects.

St. Vincent Ferrer Parish recycles empty aluminum beverage cans. The can recycling container is located next to the paper-recycling bin. We only accept beverage cans (soda, beer, juice) - no soup cans, sauce cans or other types of cans please. Please make sure your cans are rinsed and completely empty before putting them in our container.

I hope everyone is enjoying this wonderfully cool summer. Although the summer holiday is yet to conclude the start of the 2009-10 school year is but a few weeks away. The following schedule of important dates and activities should be a gentle reminder of summer’s end.

I truly enjoyed meeting the wonderful families of Saint Vincent Ferrer School during the Festival. Thanks to all who have help make this year's festival a huge success!

The annual PTO “Meet and Greet” meeting will take place on Monday, August 24 at 7:00 p.m. in the school cafeteria. Everyone will gather to hear about the upcoming year and then go to his or her child’s classroom to get an overview of the 2009/2010 school year from each teacher. Refreshments will be available after the classroom sessions. We look forward to seeing all of our parents on this special night!!

We will be having our Back-to-School Coffee on Wednesday, August 26, at 8:15 a.m. in the cafeteria. Stop by and have a cup of coffee after dropping off your children and meet the other parents!

SVF’s PTO First Annual Yard Sale was a great success. Thank you to all that cleaned out their closets, attics, and basements. We had a ton of treasures to sell. A special thanks to all the great SVF families for volunteering their time and effort, we could not have pulled it off with out all the volunteers! SVF is truly blessed!

The sixth graders of our school would like to thank all who have donated pop tabs to our Ronald McDonald House project. We will continue to collect tabs through the summer and into next year in order to reach our goal of one million. We're almost there!
