14th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Our hearts go out to Jesus in this gospel because we feel his pain when his own family and friends reject him. The news of Jesus' miracles and healings had by now spread throughout the region and when he returned to Nazareth to teach in the synagogue, the people there were unbelieving. How, they wondered, could someone as common as a laborer have such authority from God? Sadly, Jesus could not do the wondrous work of God in his own hometown. There are not further times recorded in the gospels that Jesus entered another synagogue after the rejection he experienced in Nazareth.
Reflection: How many times do we shy away from saying what we know to be the truth? We may see a co-worker, a relative, or friend making some poor decisions. Or we may witness injustices in our society. It's easier to turn our heads in the other direction and not get involved. After all, our lives are going fairly well and someone else's mistakes or misfortunes don't really affect us. But don't they? We are answerable first to God, but we also need to keep in mind that our children are watching (and will eventually imitate) our every move. As difficult as it is, it is our responsibility to show them how to be strong and courageous even when our words and actions might be unpopular.
PASTOR’S DESK
FESTIVAL 2009
Festival 2009 is now part of our SVF history and we have good memories of a very enjoyable weekend.
A special “thank you” to the many dedicated workers and volunteers along with our entire parish staff who made these three days not only a successful fundraiser but also a great parish celebration.
Our chairperson, Patti Lowe and her booth captains did a super job planning and organizing the event.
Most of all, we are very grateful to the Lord for supplying us with good weather for the weekend and for the generosity of so many people who supported the festival.
Gross income (before expenses) for the 2009 Parish Festival is approximately $100,000, compared to $128,000 last year. We are grateful the Festival was a success.
Our congratulations and best wishes go out to: Nancy DeCenso, who won the grand prize of $10,000 cash and to the second place winner of the Bengals Season tickets, Terry Jones. We hope they enjoy their winnings!
YEAR FOR PRIESTS June 2009-June 2010
Pope Benedict XVI has declared June 2009 to June 2010 as the Year for Priests. The theme for the priestly year is “Faithfulness of Christ, Faithfulness of Priests.” Its purpose is to encourage what the Pope calls “the yearning for spiritual perfection” in priests.
But the Year for Priests also gives lay people a special opportunity to learn more about priesthood, to recognize and honor priests, and to encourage priestly vocations.
The Year for Priests coincides with the 150th anniversary of the death of St. John Vianney, a nineteenth-century parish priest who transformed the lives of villagers in France through his example of holiness, his celebration of the Mass, his teachings, and his ability to touch people’s souls in the Sacrament of Penance.
St. John Vianney described priesthood in this way: “The priest is not a priest for himself; he does not give himself absolution; he does not administer the Sacraments to himself. He is not for himself, he is for you… The priesthood is the love of the Heart of Jesus.”
A PRAYER FOR PRIESTS
Gracious and loving God, we thank you for the gift of our priests. Through them, we experience your presence in the sacraments. Help our priests to be strong in their vocations. Set their souls on fire with love for your people. Grant them the wisdom, understanding, and strength they need to follow in the footsteps of Jesus.
Inspire them the words they need to spread the Gospel. Allow them to experience joy in their ministry. Help them to become instruments of your divine grace. We ask this through Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns as our Eternal Priest. Amen.
MISSION APPEAL – SECOND COLLECTION
July 11 & 12
Schoenstatt Father Peter Locher will be coming to St. Vincent’s on July 11 & 12 for a mission appeal.
The Schoenstatt Fathers are part of the international Schoenstatt Movement founded by Father Joseph Kentenich in 1914. Several religious communities are part of the Movement, the Schoenstatt Fathers being the youngest with 380 members working in all continents.
Schoenstatt Fathers have 40 priests and 130 seminarians. The Schoenstatt Fathers in India are just now in the position to develop several projects to realize their charism within the demands of the country. They aim at developing a center of spiritual renewal, a children's village for deserted and neglected children, predominantly girls, and a school for qualified formation of the growing middle class in the country. For these projects they appeal to your solidarity and ask for your generous support.
-Fr. George Kunkel

Your prayers are requested for the soul of Winifred (Winnie) Jansing whose Mass of Christian Burial was held June 27 and Walter Ungruhn whose Mass of Christian Burial was held June 30.
BAPTISM
Please welcome the newest member of our faith community: Alyssa Marie Tranter, daughter of Christopher & Kathryn Tranter who was recently baptized. Congratulations to the proud parents.
VOCATION VIEW
Who should you encourage to think about a religious vocation? What would people think if you became a priest/brother/sister?
(Mark 6:1-6)

TAKE OUT – Family Faith on the Go
Faith and Fun All Summer Long
Parents, don’t forget to look over the handout that you received. Keep it close at hand this summer as a faith sharing resource.
July 5th ~ 14th Sunday of Ordinary Time
For this week’s reflection … in the reading of Mark’s Gospel today we hear that some people didn’t accept Jesus. They questioned who he was and what he was doing. Why did some people choose not to accept Jesus? Discuss who you have had a hard time accepting as a family and how you can be more accepting.
How do you get away from problems, distractions, and worry? You may want to read “Star Light, Star Bright” on the back cover of TAKE OUT.
In addition to “TAKE OUT”…
There are also copies in the back of Church of In Focus Summer Sundays - Fun under the Catholic Sun. Please pick up your family’s copy. This year, make the Sabbath a day of genuine rest and recreation by recalling old traditions and creating a few new ones as well. Let your imagination and creativity increase your faith … and enjoy the lazy, hazy days of summer Sundays while you’re at it.
