17th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Jesus created a lot of excitement and enthusiasm among the people who came to hear his words. It is clear, however, that they did not completely understand the meaning of what he said. They looked for signs and believed that he performed miracles such as the one in today's gospel. This gospel tells of the fishes and loaves of bread multiplied to such an extent that they not only fed the large crowd, but there was plenty of food left over. The people simply saw the amount of bread increase in a way similar to God providing food for the ancient Israelites when he sent manna from heaven to fill their hunger. The people on the hillside with Jesus did not understand how bread could be spiritual nourishment or that Jesus was that bread.
Reflection: So much of our culture today is based on a “what's in it for me” attitude. We are reluctant to give our time, energy, or resources to an effort that doesn't yield a benefit directly for our families or us. Our simple acts of kindness toward others do not go unnoticed by others. When others see us give of ourselves generously, they learn about the boy who shared his food with the crowd in today's gospel.
PASTOR’S DESK
MARK YOUR CALENDAR
A blessing will be given to Mr. Douglas Alpiger, St. Vincent Ferrer School principal, during the 10:30 a.m. Mass on August 16th. Join us for donuts and coffee in Hamilton Hall after Mass. Let us give our new principal a warm SVF welcome.
FR. GEORGE’S VACATION
I will be on vacation beginning on Monday, July 27 and I will return on Friday, August 7th. We will have Communion Services Monday through Friday at 6:30 & 8:30 a.m. in the Chapel. Solemn Exposition will be as usual on Monday July 27 and August 3. On August 1 & 2, Father Michael Davis and Fr. Lou Guntzelman will celebrate Saturday confessions and the weekend Sunday Masses.
WOMEN AND SPIRIT:
CATHOLIC SISTERS IN AMERICA
Fr. George Kunkel - recommends taking time out to see this exhibit. Mark your summer calendar now to visit the Women and Spirit: Catholic Sisters in America exhibit now open at the Cincinnati Museum Center (old Union Terminal). This national traveling exhibit chronicles the extensive history and impact Sisters have had on American society. A truly inspirational and uplifting event, the exhibit runs through August 30.
Its now easier than ever to donate stock to our parish. As of July 1, 2009, St. Vincent Ferrer Parish has its own stock account at Fifth Third Bank. In the past, donations of stock had to be sold through the Archdiocese. It sometimes took weeks before we received any funds. Now the parish can receive stock directly, and Fifth Third will sell the stock and send us the funds all within a few business days. Please call Marc Greenberg, our Business Manager, for details on using our new stock account. If you have made stock donations in the past, please call Marc to receive new broker instructions.
-Fr. George Kunkel
IN MEMORIAM
Your prayers are requested for the souls of Paul Mitchell Jr. whose funeral service was held July 18 and Jeanette Rozzi whose Mass of Christian Burial was held July 24.
BAPTISM
Please welcome the newest member of our faith community: Alaina Lynne Davis, daughter of Benjamin & Melissa Davis, who was recently baptized. Congratulations to the proud parents.
VOCATION VIEW
If you are willing to share what you have, God will multiply your gifts. Imagine how God can use you to nourish a hungry world. Consider being a sister, brother, priest, or deacon.
(John 6:1-13)
WELCOME
Please welcome the following family who recently joined St. Vincent Ferrer Parish.
Andrew & Lisa Marie Dvorak
We trust that our parish will extend friendship and support to them.
YEAR FOR PRIESTS
"Faithfulness of Christ, Faithfulness of Priests" is the theme of the Year for Priests that began on June 19th, the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The Holy Father is encouraging everyone to pray for priests, in particular to repeat the
Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be five times, or any other approved prayer in honor of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (see SVF Bulletin) to
ask that priests maintain holiness of life. This year is an invitation to support, encourage and pray for all priests. Each week we will publish the names of 7 of our diocesan priests to pray for in particular. Hopefully by the end of the year we will have prayed for all of our priests and
seminarians in a special way. This week's priests are:
Sunday Fr. Raymond Aichele
Monday Fr. Henry Albietz
Tuesday Fr. Joseph Allison
Wednesday Fr. Frank Amberger
Thursday Fr. Steven Angi
Friday Fr. Christopher Armstrong
Saturday Fr. Thomas Axe
A PRAYER FOR PRIESTS
Gracious and loving God, we thank you for the gift of our priests. Through them, we experience your presence in the sacraments. Help our priests to be strong in their vocations. Set their souls on fire with love for your people. Grant them the wisdom, understanding, and strength they need to follow in the footsteps of Jesus.
Inspire them the words they need to spread the Gospel. Allow them to experience joy in their ministry. Help them to become instruments of your divine grace. We ask this through Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns as our Eternal Priest. Amen.
CALENDAR SCHEDULING FOR 2009-2010
EVERY group or organization
that regularly meets or hosts events at SVF should submit to the parish office in writing their desired dates, times and room the group wishes to reserve for the 2009-2010 year (August-June). Please list a contact person who will be responsible for clean up and security and if set-up time is needed. Should any conflicts arise throughout the year this person will be contacted. Thank you in advance for your cooperation and assistance.
BAPTISMAL PREPARATION PROGRAM
Parents are expected to attend the program prior to the Baptism of their first child. Godparents are welcome. The program is offered quarterly. The next program will be offered Sunday, August 30th at 1:15 p.m. in the Chapel. Please call the Parish Office to register.

Please keep in your prayers all the men and women who are currently in the military serving our country.

TAKE OUT – Family Faith on the Go
Faith and Fun All Summer Long
Parents, don’t forget to look over the handout that you received. Keep it close at hand this summer as a faith sharing resource.
July 26th ~ 17h Sunday of Ordinary Time
For this week’s reflection … in the reading for today (John 6: 1-15) a young boy offers a few loaves of bread and few fish to Jesus to feed the large crowd. Jesus multiplied the boy’s small offering into enough food for the crowd. When in your life have you had some small act of kindness come back to enrich your life beyond your expectation? Share these moments with the members of your family. What does this say about being generous with the gifts and talents you have been given?
Review on page 6 of TAKE OUT the 5 ways to keep your faith strong.
In addition to “TAKE OUT”…
There are also copies in the back of Church of In Focus Summer Sundays - Fun under the Catholic Sun. Please pick up your family’s copy. This year, make the Sabbath a day of genuine rest and recreation by recalling old traditions and creating a few new ones as well. Let your imagination and creativity increase your faith … and enjoy the lazy, hazy days of summer Sundays while you’re at it.

Parishioners who were unable to attend the drive can donate at a local Hoxwoth center and ask that their gift be “credited” to our parish. Please make an appointment by calling 451-0910. Our next parish blood drive is scheduled for January 16.
