self-pride which must give way to weakness and

powerlessness.

13th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Mark tells two stories at the same time in this Gospel. First of all in the crowd, a woman who had been suffering with an illness for many years, touched Jesus' robe and was immediately healed. At the same time, walking with Jesus in the crowd is Jairus, a prominent official of the synagogue. Jairus had searched out Jesus to ask for his help in healing his daughter. When the woman touched Jesus' robe, he felt the healing energy flow through him and searched out the person who had touched him. When the woman came forward, Jesus told her that she was healed by her own faith. At that very moment, people from the official's house came to him telling him that his daughter was dead, that he should not bother with the teacher anymore but come home. Jesus went with the man and healed his daughter.

Reflection:  We all know people who are sick? Make a prayer card for these people and lift them up in prayer every day. You might even send them a cheerful note or card and let them know you and your family are praying for them.

PASTOR’S DESK

YEAR FOR PRIESTS June 2009-June 2010

Pope Benedict XVI has declared June 2009 to June 2010 as the Year for Priests.  The theme for the priestly year is “Faithfulness of Christ, Faithfulness of Priests.”  Its purpose is to encourage what the Pope calls “the yearning for spiritual perfection” in priests.

But the Year for Priests also gives lay people a special opportunity to learn more about priesthood, to recognize and honor priests, and to encourage priestly vocations.

The Year for Priests coincides with the 150th anniversary of the death of St. John Vianney, a nineteenth-century parish priest who transformed the lives of villagers in France through his example of holiness, his celebration of the Mass, his teachings, and his ability to touch people’s souls in the Sacrament of Penance.

St. John Vianney described priesthood in this way: “The priest is not a priest for himself; he does not give himself absolution; he does not administer the Sacraments to himself.  He is not for himself, he is for you… The priesthood is the love of the Heart of Jesus.”

A PRAYER FOR PRIESTS

Gracious and loving God, we thank you for the      gift of our priests.  Through them, we experience your presence in the sacraments.  Help our priests to be strong in their vocations.  Set their souls on fire with love for your people.  Grant them the wisdom, understanding, and strength they need to follow in the footsteps of Jesus.

Inspire them the words they need to spread the Gospel.  Allow them to experience joy in their ministry.  Help them to become instruments of your divine grace. We ask this through Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns as our Eternal Priest. Amen.

LOOKING AHEAD

Our country celebrates its 233rd Independence Day, Saturday, July 4.  It seems most appropriate to celebrate Independence Day by thanking God for all the blessings that have been bestowed on our country.

Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, July 4th at 9:00 a.m. in the Church.  All Parish Offices will be closed on Friday, July 3 in observance of the holiday.

PETER’S PENCE – HOLY FATHERS COLLECTION – JUNE 27 & 28

The Peter’s Pence Collection helps the Holy Father provide emergency assistance to suffering people throughout the world.  Contributions to the Peter’s Pence Collection are given directly by the Holy Father to diocese that are suffering from immediate emergencies as a result of war, oppression and natural disasters.  Please be generous to this special collection.

MISSION APPEAL – SECOND COLLECTION

Schoenstatt Father Peter Locher will be coming to St. Vincent’s on July 11 & 12 for a mission appeal.

The Schoenstatt Fathers are part of the international Schoenstatt Movement founded by Father Joseph Kentenich in 1914. Several religious communities are part of the Movement, the Schoenstatt Fathers being the youngest with 380 members working in all continents.

Schoenstatt Fathers have 40 priests and 130 seminarians. The Schoenstatt Fathers in India are just now in the position to develop several projects to realize their charism within the demands of the country. They aim at developing a center of spiritual renewal, a children's village for deserted and neglected children, predominantly girls, and a school for qualified formation of the growing middle class in the country. For these projects they appeal to your solidarity and ask for your generous support.

PASTORAL COUNCIL ELECTS NEW CHAIRPERSON

Election of officers was held at the June Pastoral Council meeting.  John Abraham will be the chairperson and Amy Hobler will be the vice-chairperson for 2009-2010.  Thanks to Barry Auer (chairperson) and John Abraham (vice-chair) for serving during 2008-2009 as officers of Pastoral Council.

CATHOLIC MINISTRIES APPEAL

To date $18,467 has been pledged towards our parish goal for the Catholic Ministries Appeal.   The six ministries that benefit from this appeal are the education of seminarians, deacons & lay pastoral ministers; Catholic Social Services; Chaplains for hospitals and prisons; College campus ministers; St. Rita School for the Deaf; and the retirement fund for diocesan priests.    We encourage all parishioners to participate. Please make all checks payable to “Catholic Ministries Appeal” and mail them directly to the Archdiocese using the white “CMA” envelope mailed to each household.

-Fr. George Kunkel

TAKE OUT – Family Faith on the Go

Faith and Fun All Summer Long

Parents, don’t forget to look over the TAKE OUT handout you received.  Keep it close at hand this summer as a faith sharing resource.

June 28th ~ 13th Sunday of Ordinary Time

For this week’s reflection … in the Gospel from Mark 5: 21-43, Jesus cures a little girl at the request of a father.  Jesus asked the father to have faith in him, even when all appeared hopeless.  How strong is your faith in God?  Who do you know that is a model of faith for you?  Spend some time talking about those who are models of faith and trust in your family.

While you are on a vacation or other outing this summer, provide your child/ren with a spiral bound sketchpad.  Invite them to draw a picture and/or write about their experiences each day.  It’s fun to travel through your child’s eyes.

In addition to “TAKE OUT”…

There are also copies in the back of Church of In Focus Summer Sundays - Fun under the Catholic Sun.  Please pick up your family’s copy.  This year, make the Sabbath a day of genuine rest and recreation by recalling old traditions and creating a few new ones as well.  Let your imagination and creativity increase your faith … and enjoy the lazy, hazy days of summer Sundays while you’re at it.
