12th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Many people believe that Mark tells this story of the storm at sea to the people of the early Church for a specific purpose. As the story unfolds, Jesus has just left the crowds of Galilee with his disciples and is crossing the Sea of Galilee. Jesus has fallen asleep in the bow of the boat when a sudden storm comes up threatening to capsize the boat. The disciples wake Jesus hoping that he will help save them. The first thing Jesus does is calm the storm. Once the immediate danger is over, he then turns to the disciples and wonders why their faith is so weak.
Reflection: The next time your family shares a meal together, talk about people you know who are going through some “stormy times”. Maybe it is a neighbor, a relative, friend, or maybe even someone sitting at the table. As a family, think of some ways you might help calm the storm. Commit to some action and be diligent in your follow-through.
PASTOR’S DESK
FATHER’S DAY
We wish all fathers and grandfathers a Happy Father’s Day. If they are deceased, let us remember them in prayer. Let us remember all the special men in our lives, a husband who may not be a father, and our brothers, uncles, cousins, men religious and friends who have been special role models for us. May God bless you all.
FESTIVAL 2009
We only have a week to go before our annual summer festival. The various committees and booth captains have been hard at work planning and organizing the event and many final preparations will be taking place in the next few weeks. In additions to the festival being a fundraiser, it is also an opportunity for us to come together as a parish family and extend our Catholic Christian hospitality to the local community. Let’s do our best to extend a warm welcome to our guest and visitors – and let them know we really appreciate their patronage. We still need volunteers to staff all of our booths. Call Patti Lowe @ 910-0668 – we need everyone’s help and participation to make this year’s festival a success.
PETER’S PENCE – HOLY FATHERS COLLECTION – JUNE 27 & 28
The Peter’s Pence Collection helps the Holy Father provide emergency assistance to suffering people throughout the world. Contributions to the Peter’s Pence Collection are given directly by the Holy Father to diocese that are suffering from immediate emergencies as a result of war, oppression and natural disasters. Please be generous to this special collection.
THANKS TO THE OUTGOING PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL MEMBERS
We wish to express our gratitude to the SVF parishioners who have completed a two-year member-at-large term of office: Barry Auer and Mary Kay Lynch; Communication & Volunteer Recruitment: Gerald Shannon; Social Justice & Outreach Commission: Chris Homan and Parish Education Commission Representative: Ken Gleason.
May God bless these individuals for their years of service to St. Vincent Ferrer Parish.
CATHOLIC MINISTRIES APPEAL
To date $16,937 has been pledged towards our parish goal for the Catholic Ministries Appeal. The six ministries that benefit from this appeal are the education of seminarians, deacons & lay pastoral ministers; Catholic Social Services; Chaplains for hospitals and prisons; College campus ministers; St. Rita School for the Deaf; and the retirement fund for diocesan priests. We encourage all parishioners to participate. Please make all checks payable to “Catholic Ministries Appeal” and mail them directly to the Archdiocese using the white “CMA” envelope mailed to each household.
-Fr. George Kunkel
BAPTISM

Parents, don’t forget to look over the handout that you received. Keep it close at hand this summer as a faith sharing resource.
June 21st ~ 12th Sunday of Ordinary Time
For this week’s reflection … the Gospel for today is Mark 5: 35-41. On page 2 of the TAKE OUT handout you will find a recipe for Father’s Day Hero Sub. With a little help, the children may help layer the sandwich for Dad!

In addition to “TAKE OUT”…
There are also copies in the back of Church of In Focus Summer Sundays - Fun under the Catholic Sun. Please pick up your family’s copy. This year, make the Sabbath a day of genuine rest and recreation by recalling old traditions and creating a few new ones as well. ST. VINCENT FERRER SCHOOL WELCOMES OUR NEW PRINCIPAL – June 2009

I was born and raised in upstate New York and am a member of a large Catholic family that is composed of eight boys and two girls. I am a member of St. Mary Parish in Hyde Park and have enjoyed living in the Greater Cincinnati area for eighteen years. My wife, Rosy, is a pediatrician in private practice, and my daughter, Sommer, is the Director of Education at the Children’s Home of Northern Kentucky. The 2009-2010 school year will be my twenty-eighth year in education. During these years, I have taught a variety of subjects such as physical education, mathematics, literature, science, philosophy and graduate studies. My teaching and administrative experience has included a private school, a large suburban public school, an urban public school, a university, and an independent Catholic school. My administrative positions have included athletic director, assistant principal and principal. I have a B.S. in Education and a M.A. in Philosophy from the University of Louisville. From the University of Cincinnati I have obtained a M. Ed. in Educational Administration and completed my doctoral coursework in Urban Educational Leadership. I am looking forward to working with the teachers, students, parents and staff at St. Vincent Ferrer School to assure that our school and community continue to grow and flourish.
