11th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

We sometimes hear debates about the letter of the law and the spirit of the law.  That is the issue in today’s Gospel.  Simon is a devout Jew, a Pharisee.  He is faithful to God’s law.  Yet, he fails to see the woman who washes Jesus’ feet with her tears as a human being; rather he sees an unacceptable person acting in an improper way.  Jesus challenges us to set aside societal judgments and labels, and to welcome and respect the worthiness of others.

Living the Word: Think about a situation in which your loving acceptance of another might be challenged by society’s notion of what is proper.

PASTOR’S DESK

FATHER’S DAY

We wish all fathers and grandfathers a Happy Father’s Day.  If they are deceased, let us remember them in prayer.  Let us remember all the special men in our lives, a husband who may not be a father, and our brothers, uncles, cousins, men religious and friends who have been special role models for us.  May God bless you all.

THANK YOU FROM FR. GEORGE FOR THE REMEMBRANCE ON HIS 30TH ANNIVERSARY OF ORDINATION

I truly appreciate the many SVF parishioners who remembered me with thoughtful greeting cards, promises of prayer, gifts and “delicious goodies”.  May God bless you for your kindness to me.

CONGRATULATIONS ON SPECIAL WEDDING ANNIVERSARIES

Happy 65th Wedding Anniversary on June 22 to Gerry & Lyle Dreibelbis.

Happy 67th Wedding Anniversary on June 22 to Florence & Joseph Hackman.

NEW DIRECTOR OF FAITH FORMATION BEGINS ON JULY 1st

Karen McMichael will soon join our St. Vincent Ferrer staff as Director of Faith Formation.  Karen has previously worked as DRE at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Western Hills for over 10 years.  She has a background in education, working with children as young as preschool age and as old as high school age; she worked with adults as well.  She worked in public and parochial settings in Ohio, Kentucky and Virginia.  As DRE working with families, she saw the need for expanding her background to include counseling and so Karen worked on a Master’s degree in Marriage & Family Counseling; spending time gaining experience in the counseling field.

As Karen herself said: “As wife, mother and grandmother, I understand many of the needs of families and am able to relate to varied groups.  Returning to service within the Church brings me full circle.  Being with faith filled people enriches my own faith life.  I am looking forward to working with the members of St. Vincent Ferrer Parish.”

                -Fr. George Kunkel

VOCATION VIEW

Love abounds when forgiveness is experienced.  Forgiveness frees one to follow Jesus.  Rededicate your life to Jesus. (Luke 7:36-8:3)

FAREWELL GOOD SERVANTS OF GOD

July 1st has been selected as the date for the Parish to honor Sister Kaye Lednik and Judy Verny.  All are invited to attend a gathering to be held in the Cafeteria, following the 10:30 Mass that day.

Through these years, both directly and indirectly, thousands of lives have been touched by their work of helping to build our community.  Youths and adults alike have had their faith foundations formed and strengthened by their efforts. With a combined total of 31 years dedicated to the SVF Parish, they truly exemplify Christ’s call to serve others in His name.

So now it’s our opportunity to show our appreciation. Please mark your calendars for July 1st to join in the celebration of their work and to wish them well as they prepare to leave us.  A table will be provided for those wishing to express personal thanks through a card or gift.

Crossing the Desert

Learning to let go, see clearly, and live simply

By:  Robert J. Wicks

Code:  Spirituality

Popular culture posits that the desert is a place to be avoided.  It is a wasteland, with nothing to offer us.  Few creatures live in the desert, and mere survival is considered a success.  Robert J. Wicks, drawing on the wisdom of the desert fathers and mothers of old, shows us that the metaphorical desert can offer us keys to a deeper, more fulfilling life.

To avoid being merely a mass of information and undigested experiences, we need focused reflection.  Reflection then leads to action and by grace to transformation of the entire self.  God loves us in our brokenness.  If we receive grace, it transforms our vulnerabilities and brokenness, allowing us to be both fully ourselves and open to others.  Authentic prayer life and spiritual direction guide us on this journey in which we can not remain passive.  Crossing the Desert is not an informational treatise, it is a manual to be lived and practiced.
