MOST HOLY BODY & BLOOD OF CHRIST

Every Mass is a celebration of Christ’s body and blood, and today we celebrate a feast honoring this truth.  We bring to mind the beautiful words of Jesus: ”My flesh is real food; my blood is real drink.”  By Jesus’ own words of invitation, we gather around the table to share his body and blood and to become one with him. Every time we extend our cupped hands, receive the body and blood of Christ, and offer our acclamation of “Amen”, we accept Jesus’ invitation to become his body and blood in the world.

Prayer Moment: Thank you, God, for giving us your Son’s body and blood as sacred nourishment.

Payday Lending Industry Reform--From the Cincinnati Archdiocese Catholic Social Action Office:                                            YOUR ADVOCACY IS NEEDED!  CALL YOUR OHIO SENATOR NOW TO REFORM THE PAYDAY LENDING INDUSTRY!  Last June, the Ohio Catholic bishops encouraged us to address the cycle of debt caused by the payday lending industry in our state.  Today, there are more check cashing storefronts in Ohio than McDonalds, Burger King and Wendy’s stores COMBINED!  (According to a report by Housing Research & Advocacy Center and Policy Matters Ohio.)  The typical borrower ends up caught in a revolving door of 8 to 12 back-to-back, short-term loans per year, which results in an annualized interest rate of 391%!  Over the past year, we’ve worked with a number of local groups to support attempts to address this generally unregulated field of lending.

You can make a difference!  On April 30, the Ohio House passed House Bill 545, which creates a new “Short Term Lender Law”, places a rate cap of 28% on short-term lenders, limits borrowers to four short-term loans per year, and establishes a Financial Literacy Education Fund. The bill has moved on to the Ohio Senate, and our Senators need to hear from you.  Please take just a few minutes to contact your Senator and ask him/her to protect the working poor and all Ohio consumers from the spiraling indebtedness caused by payday lending.  If you are unsure of your Senate district, you can search by zip code at the following website: http://www.senate.state.oh.us/senators/SenateZipSearch.html .

For more information on this issue, please visit the Catholic Conference of Ohio at http://www.ohiocathconf.org/I/EJ/payday.htm .
