ASCENSION OF THE LORD

Most scholars believe this section was added to Mark’s gospel in order to make it more compatible with the other gospel endings.  Just before Jesus ascended into heaven, he commissioned the remaining eleven disciples to go into all the world and tell everyone they possible could about the Good News.  The disciples then saw Jesus lifted up bodily into heaven where he would sit at the Father’s right hand.

Reflection: There is an expression, “preaching to the choir”.  It is easy to preach to the choir because they already believe in the Good News and share our faith.  The challenge for us who live as disciples and teach others that they too are disciples comes when we meet people that are not “in the choir”.  Do we sometimes give up or turn away from our commission to carry the Good News to all people?

PASTOR’S DESK

FAREWELL MASS ON MAY 30th FOR ST. VINCENT FERRER PRINCIPAL STEVE ZINSER

On Saturday, May 30, at the 5:00 p.m. Mass, we will bestow a farewell blessing upon Mr. Z who has faithfully served our parish school over the past five years.  A reception in honor of Steve Zinser will follow the Mass in Hamilton Hall.

PENTECOST PLANS

Sunday, May 31st, is the feast of Pentecost.  The liturgical color “red” is one of the signs that the church uses to signify the presence and the gifts of the Holy Spirit.  Please consider wearing something “red” to Mass the weekend of May 30th and 31st to symbolize the Holy Spirit living in our faith community.

PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL ELECTIONS

The ballots from the parish Pastoral Council Election last weekend have been counted, and Paul Korchak & Kitty O’Brien have been elected to member-at-large positions.

Congratulations to the new members of the Parish Pastoral Council and a sincere word of thanks to all the parishioners who placed their names in nomination.

I am especially grateful to the members of the Council who are completing their term.

MEMORIAL DAY MASS

On Memorial Day, Monday, May 25, we will have Mass at 9:00 a.m. in Church. It will be a great opportunity to gather as one Eucharistic body to pray for our beloved dead.  May all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

ALL PARISH OFFICES will be closed on Monday, May 25 for Memorial Day.  Also, there will be no Solemn Exposition.

HONORING THE CLASS OF 2009

May 30-May 31

We would like to invite all of our parishioners who are graduating this year from elementary school, high school, college and graduate school to attend any Mass on May 30 or 31.  We will give a special Baccalaureate blessing to honor our graduates and to thank God for their accomplishments.

CATHOLIC MINISTRIES APPEAL

To date $16,171 has been pledged towards our parish goal for the Catholic Ministries Appeal.  If you have yet to make a pledge, you will be receiving in the mail this week a letter encouraging you to make a pledge or payment. The six ministries that benefit from this appeal are the education of seminarians, deacons & lay pastoral ministers; Catholic Social Services; Chaplains for hospitals and prisons; College campus ministers; St. Rita School for the Deaf; and the retirement fund for diocesan priests.    We encourage all parishioners to participate. Please make all checks payable to “Catholic Ministries Appeal” and mail them directly to the Archdiocese using the white “CMA” envelope mailed to each household.

-Fr. George Kunkel

SCHOOL NEWS

DID YOU KNOW?

Our collection for our friends in Zimbabwe will end soon. Once, again, we are collecting any school supplies, clothing, hygiene items and plain old "cash". This has been our focus for the last couple of months. All items will be sent to them over the summer. This partnership can continue for many years and we hope to start a great "pen pal" program with our "neighbors" in Zimbabwe.  Any donations can be sent with any of our students or dropped off at our office.    Thanks!!

STUDENT TUITION ASSISTANCE FUND

After all the weekend Masses next weekend, May 30 & 31 Student Council members will be at the doors accepting your fully tax deductible donations to our school’s Student Tuition Assistance Fund (STAR).  Thank you in advance for your continued support of our parish school.

WE ARE GETTING SO CLOSE!

With your help, the St. Vincent Ferrer School junior high has currently collected 800,000+ pop tabs for Ronald McDonald House charities.  Our impressive hallway display needs only a few more filled bins to reach our goal of one million tabs. Tabs may be placed in the box in the church's entryway or dropped by the school office.  Many thanks to all who have donated and continue to donate tabs to help our campaign.
