The Ascension of the Lord
Acts 1:1-11 Eph 1:17-23 Mk 16:15-20
These Scriptures proclaim: Jesus
commissions his disciples to baptize in his
name, reminding them that he is always present
through his Spirit. Having ascended to his
Father amid cries of gladness, we are to be his
witnesses for we have been gifted with his Spirit
of wisdom and revelation. Let us, therefore, live
in a manner worthy of the call we have received.

6th SUNDAY OF EASTER
A complete circle of love is found
in this gospel reading. God loved the Son, Jesus. The Son loves his followers,
and the followers show their love for God through their love for one another. It
is clear in this reading that while we are part of this circle, we are only part
of it because God chose us to be. Our response to God's choice for us is simply
to show our love for God through the love we show to other human beings.
Reflection:
Our lives are very full and busy. It's like juggling apples and catching each
falling one to prevent it from splatting to the floor while tossing the others
high in the air. But sometimes we need to think beyond the immediate demands of
jobs, family, and home. When we widen the circle of those we include in our
love, people see first hand how we live this gospel message. When we reach out
to others, especially those who are difficult to love, they learn by our example
what Jesus asks us to do in showing our love to one another just as he shows his
love to us.
PASTOR’S DESK
After five years of exceptional service to St. Vincent Ferrer School, our principal, Steve Zinser ("Mr. Z" to students, teachers and friends), is leaving. To begin our search for a new principal, we have advertised the position in Catholic newspapers in Cincinnati, Covington and Indianapolis, and on the Archdiocesan web site. We have formed a search committee and are already receiving applications. The members of the search committee are:
Fr. George Kunkel - SVF Pastor
Karen McMichael - SVF Director of Faith Formation
Lisa Neubauer – 8th Grade Teacher at SVF School
Marc Greenberg - SVF Business Manager
Jenny Powers - SVF School Parent, and 2nd
Grade Teacher at Sharonville Elementary School
Blane Collison -Principal at Moeller HS, SVF
School Parent and former SVF School Principal
We wish Mr. Z all the best and blessings of the Holy Spirit in his new endeavors. Please watch this space in the Bulletin for updates on the search for a new principal.
Our annual Parish Pastoral Council Elections will be held at all the Masses this weekend, May 16 & 17. Many thanks to all of our parishioners who have placed their names in nomination.
THE FEAST OF THE ASCENSION
Sunday, May 24 we celebrate the feast of Jesus’ Ascension into heaven. You may recall several years ago this holy day was transferred from Thursday in the Sixth Week of Easter to the Seventh Sunday in Easter. This means that all of the principal feasts of the Easter season – the Lord’s Resurrection, His Ascension into heaven and the Coming of the Holy Spirit (Pentecost) are now celebrated on a Sunday.
MEMORIAL DAY MASS
On Memorial Day, Monday, May 25, we will have Mass at 9:00 a.m. in Church. It will be a great opportunity to gather as one Eucharistic body to pray for our beloved dead. May all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
ALL PARISH OFFICES will be closed on Monday, May 25 for Memorial Day. Also, there will be no Solemn Exposition.
HONORING THE CLASS OF 2009
May 30-May 31
We would like to invite all of our parishioners who are graduating this year from elementary school, high school, college and graduate school to attend any Mass on May 30 or 31. We will give a special Baccalaureate blessing to honor our graduates and to thank God for their accomplishments.
CATHOLIC MINISTRIES APPEAL
To date $16,171 has been pledged towards our parish goal for the Catholic Ministries Appeal. If you have yet to make a pledge, you will be receiving in the mail this week a letter encouraging you to make a pledge or payment. The six ministries that benefit from this appeal are the education of seminarians, deacons & lay pastoral ministers; Catholic Social Services; Chaplains for hospitals and prisons; College campus ministers; St. Rita School for the Deaf; and the retirement fund for diocesan priests. We encourage all parishioners to participate. Please make all checks payable to “Catholic Ministries Appeal” and mail them directly to the Archdiocese using the white “CMA” envelope mailed to each household.
-Fr. George Kunkel
IN MEMORIAM
Your prayers are requested for the soul of Edgar L. Barnes whose funeral service was held May 13.

We trust that our parish will extend friendship and support to them.

SOCIAL JUSTICE AND OUTREACH
HABITAT FOR HUMANITY UDATE...
Break out those hammers... the schedule's now set for St Vincent Ferrer participation in the building of two homes on Hallwood Place in Avondale. The Casandra Engleman Family (3458 Hallwood Place), and the Jonathan and Ashley Cephas Family (3454 Hallwood Place), are the partner families for this years homes. Paper Recycling
Bringing your paper trash to the green and yellow bins next to the school, you are supporting SJ&O activities as well as helping the environment. We receive about $100 from Abitibi each month that we then use to sponsor mission work and to help support SVF projects.
Thank you!!
ALUMINUM CAN RECYCLING
St. Vincent Ferrer Parish recycles empty aluminum beverage cans. The can recycling container is located next to the paper-recycling bin. We only accept beverage cans (soda, beer, juice) - no soup cans, sauce cans or other types of cans please. Please make sure your cans are rinsed and completely empty before putting them in our container.
SCHOOL NEWS
DID YOU KNOW?
Our eighth grade class will take their annual trip to Columbus on Wednesday, May 20th. This activity helps them have a better understanding of our state and democratic process. We visit the State House and Senate and observe our elected officials in action. We also visit a replica of the Santa Maria (Christopher Columbus' ship), and learn about his travels to the New World. This event is coordinated by Mrs. Michele Frost, our junior high social studies teacher.
WE ARE GETTING SO CLOSE!
With your help, the St. Vincent Ferrer School junior high has currently collected 800,000+ pop tabs for Ronald McDonald House charities. Our impressive hallway display needs only a few more filled bins to reach our goal of one million tabs. Tabs may be placed in the box in the church's entryway or dropped by the school office. Many thanks to all who have donated and continue to donate tabs to help our campaign.

OTHER PARISH NEWS
A BIG THANK YOU TO THE VOLUNTEERS FROM CROSSROADS CHURCH
Take a good look at all the landscaping plots on our SVF campus. Many of the garden areas have been mulched and new flowers added thanks to the donation of time, talent and treasure by our brothers and sisters at Crossroads Community. They have chosen SVF as one of their many citywide projects for their GO CINCINNATI program this year. Their offer to spruce up our grounds is a thank you to our parish for all the support by our eighth grade class for one of their mission projects in Africa. The eighth grade has been corresponding with students in Africa and sending food items and donations all year under the leadership of their teacher Mrs. Lisa Neubauer.
On behalf of all our volunteers in the SVF Adopt-A- Plot ministry and our parish community we want to voice our appreciation to the Crossroads Community for their kindness and our admiration of our students for their witness to their Christian values.

About the speaker: Gerry Faust will be the featured speaker at the annual SVF Father-Son Communion Breakfast. Mr. Faust is the former football coach at the University of Notre Dame and the University of Akron. He had a highly successful run at Moeller High School in Cincinnati, Ohio (1962-80), where he built the program from scratch. The Crusaders under Faust had a 178-23-2 record and included seven unbeaten seasons, four national prep titles, and five Ohio state titles in his last six seasons. A devout Roman Catholic, Coach Faust’s talk will focus on the importance of a faith based vision in life with an emphasis on how he has applied it in the game of football.
