5th SUNDAY OF EASTER
By using the image of a vine and its branches, Jesus helped his listeners understand the interconnectedness of relationships between the Father, Jesus, and his followers. Jesus is the fine and we, the followers, are the branches that grow from the vine. The gardener, the one who provided the growth and did the trimming, was God. When we are living examples of God’s love and act as Jesus did, we provide much fruit. When we fail to do this, we create a lot of dead wood and produce no fruit.
Reflection: For many of us, there are certain things we enjoy in our lives. Of course it is healthy to take care of ourselves, but this reading gives us an opportunity to see if there are some things that no longer contribute to our growth on the branches. The fruit we bear is faith and love. Do we need to do some pruning in order to show others that we are truly fruit-bearing branches on Jesus’ vine?
PASTOR’S DESK
After five years of exceptional service to St. Vincent Ferrer School, our principal, Steve Zinser ("Mr. Z" to students, teachers and friends), is leaving. To begin our search for a new principal, we have advertised the position in Catholic newspapers in Cincinnati, Covington and Indianapolis, and on the Archdiocese web site. We have formed a search committee and are already receiving applications. The members of the search committee are:
Fr. George Kunkel - SVF Pastor
Karen McMichael - SVF Director of Faith Formation
Lisa Neubauer – 8th Grade Teacher at SVF School
Marc Greenberg - SVF Business Manager
Jenny Powers - SVF School Parent, and 2nd
Grade Teacher at Sharonville Elementary School
Blane Collison -Principal at Moeller HS, SVF
School Parent and former SVF School Principal
We wish Mr. Z all the best and blessings of the Holy Spirit in his new endeavors. Please watch this space in the Bulletin for updates on the search for a new principal.
We wish all mothers and grandmothers a Happy Mother’s Day. If they are deceased, let us remember them in prayer. Let us remember all special women in our lives: a wife who may not be a mother, our sisters, aunts, cousins, women of religious and friends who have been special role models for us. May God bless you all.
Our annual Parish Pastoral Council Elections will be held at all the Masses next weekend, May 16 & 17. Many thanks to all of our parishioners who have placed their names in nomination.
Our grade school children will have their annual Marian Prayer Service on Wednesday, May 13th at 11:00 a.m. in the Church. May is the month traditionally dedicated to Mary, the Mother of God – and all are welcome to join us that morning as we honor the Blessed Virgin.
Sunday, May 3 marked our final PREP session for 2008-2009. The weeks and months have gone by quickly and it has been a good year of prayer and study for the students and teachers alike. May God bless abundantly the PREP teachers and volunteers who bring God’s word and the teachings of the Church to our students each Sunday. Your dedication is a real gift to our parish community.
LECTORS SCHEDULE
The Lectors’ new schedule for June, July and August – We are about to put together the next quarterly schedule for lectors. Any questions or concerns regarding the new schedule should be directed to Susan Aloisio, 745-9181 or smaloisio@fuse.net by Monday, May 11th.
THE FEAST OF THE ASCENSION
Sunday, May 24 we celebrate the feast of Jesus’ Ascension into heaven. You may recall several years ago this holy day was transferred from Thursday in the Sixth Week of Easter to the Seventh Sunday in Easter. This means that all of the principal feasts of the Easter season – the Lord’s Resurrection, His Ascension into heaven and the Coming of the Holy Spirit (Pentecost) are now celebrated on a Sunday.
HONORING THE CLASS OF 2009
May 30-May 31
We would like to invite all of our parishioners who are graduating this year from elementary school, high school, college and graduate school to attend any Mass on May 30 or 31. We will give a special Baccalaureate blessing to honor our graduates and to thank God for their accomplishments.
CATHOLIC MINISTRIES APPEAL
All we have and all we are, are gifts from God. We are responsible for using these gifts as God intends. The Church is one of God’s great gifts to all humankind. We are all responsible for providing the resources the Church needs to carry out its mission. The Catholic Ministries Appeal is a significant opportunity to carry out that responsibility. This appeal helps in the education of seminarians, deacons & lay pastoral ministers; Catholic Social Services; Chaplains for hospitals and prisons; College campus ministers; St. Rita School for the Deaf; and the retirement fund for diocesan priests. Please make all checks payable to “Catholic Ministries Appeal” and mail them directly to the Archdiocese using the white “CMA” envelope mailed to each household. To date $16,000 has been pledged towards our parish goal. No gift is too small.
-Fr. George Kunkel
A BLESSING FOR MOTHERS
We bless you and we praise you,
God of our mothers!
You are the God of Eve, mother of all
the living.
You are the God of Elizabeth, who bore the Baptist and of Anne, the grandmother of Jesus.
You are the God of Mary,
Joseph’s spouse and mother of our Savior,
given by Jesus on the cross to be
the mother of us all.
We thank you, God, for the gift of our mothers,
for grandmothers and godmothers
and mother-in-laws.
Send your Holy Spirit upon our mothers
by whose hands we were fed and clothed, in whose laps we learned to sing and speak, play and pray; at whose side we hear your word and celebrate the beauty of your creation.
Heal their pains and disappointments,
and forgive all that needs to be forgiven.
Give to them many times over the good that they have given to others.
Welcome into your kingdom all of our
mothers who have died.
Fill this world, O God, with a mother’s love!
BAPTISMS
Please welcome the newest members of our faith community: Emery Elizabeth Giglio & Nicholas James Giglio, children of Anthony & Elizabeth Giglio who were recently baptized. Congratulations to the proud parents.
IN MEMORIAM
Your prayers are request for the soul of Barbara Bergman whose funeral service was held on May 2.
VOCATION VIEW
Jesus, the true vine, promised that if we live in him we will produce abundantly. Look for the signs of new life in you. Find ways to nourish your relationship with Jesus.
(John 15:1-8)

A Scout is Reverent
In addition to several community service projects, including making Christmas gifts and singing Christmas carols for the residents of Mercy St. Theresa, this year the Pack sponsored a Scout outing to the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption in Covington for Mass and a tour during Advent and a special program on the Sorrowful Mysteries during Lent with the opportunity for SVF students to earn one of Scouting’s Rosary Patches. St. Vincent also continued its strong Religious Emblem program, with 16 parish boys from three different Cub Scout Packs completing one of the age-appropriate faith formation programs designed by the National Catholic Committee on Scouting.
The Light of Christ Emblem has been earned by Sam Kastner, Andrew Schmid, Jack Sichel, Ethan Sieber, Quin Smith, and David Szczykutowicz.

Congratulations to Kevin Foster, Augie Painter, and David Schneider who crossed over this spring to Boy Scout Troop 18 at St. Savior Catholic Church. Special kudos to Augie and David who also earned the Arrow of Light, Cub Scouting’s highest honor. .
Congratulations, Eagle Scouts!
Although St. Vincent does not sponsor a Boy Scout troop, many young men in our parish are members of other local troops. Since last May, three Boy Scouts from our parish earned the coveted rank of Eagle Scout. Congratulations to Chris Cowens of Troop 502, Robert Joseph of Troop 18, and Joshua Sharp of Troop 258.
