EASTER SUNDAY

In today’s Gospel, the tomb of the crucified Jesus is found empty.  Love has triumphed.  In the emptiness of the tomb we see everything there is to see: eternal life.  Death is not a final ending but rather a passage into a glorious new life.  We know this in the Risen Jesus.  Our joy today is boundless, for the love of God conquers even the dark grip of the tomb.

Living the Word: Plan a very special Resurrection celebration to share with your family.

PASTOR’S DESK

EASTER WELCOME

We welcome all visitors to

St. Vincent’s on Easter.  We

welcome all the friends and relatives of our parishioners, “home comers” who have moved away or are home from college or the military, bereaved persons whose loved ones have died this past year, Catholics who may occasionally join us, and our neighbors who are of another faith tradition.  Happy Easter to you.

KEEP IN PRAYER

The Sisters of St. Joseph of Medaille, who have been in ministry in this archdiocese since 1903, and in St. Vincent Ferrer Parish since 1991 when Sr. Kaye began her position as Director of Religious Education, are currently at a significant juncture in their history.

The newly forming Congregation of St. Joseph, incorporating the Sisters of St. Joseph of Medaille with six other independent congregations of Sisters of St. Joseph, requests that you join in prayer with them in the week ahead as they enter into their inaugural General Chapter.  In recognition of the 357 years the Sisters of St. Joseph have ministered in the United States, please consider praying this week for the mission and ministry of the new group.

ARCHDIOCESAN FUND DRIVE

The Archdiocesan Annual Fund continues this week in our parish.  As of this writing we have reached 55% of our parish goal of $31,000.  Please be as generous as you can in order to help us reach our parish goal.  Every gift helps, and no gift is too small.

                -Fr. George Kunkel

PLEASE NOTE:  All Parish Offices will be closed Easter Monday. Also, there will be no Solemn Exposition on Monday, April 9. There will be Communion Services Tuesday – Friday.

Fr. George will be taking a few days vacation the week of April 9th.

The Mass

The Perfect Prayer for Peace

For the past two years, the Worship Commission has been evaluating the liturgical life of the parish.  We found, in our discussion on the Communion Rite during Mass, that the placement of the “Prayer for Peace”, which we have prayed since September 11, 2001, is inappropriate.  The Mass itself is the perfect prayer for peace.

The goal of the “Prayer for Peace” is the same as the goal for our Eucharistic Liturgy ~ to prayer for peace and unity.  The scriptures, the homily and reception of the Body and Blood of Jesus in Communion form us to become a people of peace.

There are six times during the Mass when we pray for peace, unity and reconciliation:

1. The Penitential Rite where we pray “Lord have mercy” or the Confiteor.

2. The General Intercessions

3. The Eucharistic Prayer.  There is a specific Eucharistic Prayer of Reconciliation (the origin of the Prayer for Peace)

4. The Sign of Peace before communion

5. Lamb of God

6. Communion, the ultimate sacrament of unity, peace and reconciliation

After consultation with the Archdiocesan Worship Office, studying General Instruction on the Roman Missal, and further discussion by the Worship Commission, it was agreed that the prayer should be removed from Mass.  It was also agreed that the prayer has much power being said by all of us as a community and that we should keep it as a part of our tradition here at St. Vincent Ferrer.  Beginning the Sunday after Easter, the entire assembly will be invited to pray the Prayer for Peace before the opening hymn at all of our Masses, led by the lector.

WELCOME

Please welcome the following parishioners who recently joined St. Vincent Parish.

The Gift of the Mass

How it shapes and changes our lives

By:  Vincent Nichols

Code:  Liturgy

“The giftedness of life is a central theme of these reflections on the Mass.  They take their starting points and shape from the Mass itself.  It is the liturgy that guides this book, as it should guide and shape our lives.   -   from the introduction

Every time we pray the Mass we are drawn into the mystery of God’s action in our lives.  The Penitential Rite, the Opening Prayer, the Creed, the presentation of the gifts – each becomes a starting point for understanding how God gives gifts of forgiveness, community, and new life.  Bishop Nichols also explores the link between the “inner moment” to which we are called.  Strengthened in Christ, we are to be the agents of his mission in our world, until we come, at last, to the fullness of future glory.

All those who wish to understand and pray the Mass more deeply will be helped by this book.  Clearly and attractively written, it draws on sources both ancient and modern, presenting the Liturgy of the Eucharist in a way that will enrich and inspire.
