3rd SUNDAY OF EASTER

At the end of Luke’s gospel, the disciples were still trying to understand what happened to Jesus, and Jesus was still trying to help them figure it out.  Following his resurrection, Jesus appeared to the disciples again.  They still had a hard time recognizing him and figuring out if he was a ghost.  To help them know he was really there with them, Jesus ate a piece of fish and asked the disciples to go out into the world to tell others the Good News.  The early Church of Luke’s community had the same problem, and much of Luke’s writing was intended to help these new Christians see that the resurrection was indeed real.  As he did at the Last Supper Jesus once again broke bread with the disciples and offered them his body.

Reflection:  Changes take place in all of us that prevent people who have not seen us for some time from recognizing us.  When friends and relatives see our children after a long absence, they almost always comment on the changes in size, height, hair color, voice, and mannerisms.  While Jesus appeared changed to the disciples and we have never even seen him at all, we still know he is with us.  Each week at Eucharist, Jesus appears to us.  Sometimes it is we who have to change in order to recognize Jesus and receive the joy he brings us in the Eucharist.

CATHOLIC RELIEF SERVICES COLLECTION

The State Department estimates that nearly 5 million people have been displaced, forced to leave their homes, because of the war in Iraq.  The Catholic Relief Services Collection supports resettlement services for refugees, serves victims of human trafficking and provides pastoral care and advocacy.  Of the 50,000 total refugees authorized to enter the United States in 2007, nearly one-third were helped by USCCB Migration and Refugee Services, one organization receiving funds from the Collection.  The Collection also supports legal services for refugees, advocacy, relief and development, and disaster/emergency relief.  When you donate to The Catholic Relief Services Collection, you give hope.  Please be generous in today’s collection.

FIRST EUCHARIST

Congratulations to our Second Graders who are celebrating their First Holy Communion this Sunday, April 26.  May God bless them abundantly as they receive Jesus in the Eucharist for the first time.

THANK YOU TO OUR OFFICE PERSONNEL

Wednesday, April 22nd was administrative professionals/secretaries day.  Here at St. Vincent, we are very blessed to have a great office staff who help coordinate the activities and ministries of the parish and school on a daily basis.  A special “thank you” to Marc Greenberg our business manager; Ursula Hilbert our parish bookkeeper; Eileen Fritsch, our parish secretary; Sandy Stallo, our school secretary and Linda Schmits, our secretary for the Faith Formation Office.

CATHOLIC MINISTRIES APPEAL

An important part of our Lenten alms-giving here in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati has been our participation in the Catholic Ministries Appeal.  Over the years, this appeal was known as the Archbishop’s Fund Drive and more recently, as the Archdiocesan Fund Drive.  The name change was intended to put greater emphasis on the important Archdiocesan ministries that it funds.  These include: the education of seminarians, deacons & lay pastoral ministers; Catholic Social Services; Chaplains for hospitals and prisons; College campus ministers; St. Rita School for the Deaf; and the retirement fund for diocesan priests.  The appeal began on March 14.  Information was sent through the mail to all registered parishioners.  Please make all checks payable to “Catholic Ministries Appeal” and mail them directly to the Archdiocese using the white “CMA” envelope mailed to each household or use the green envelope marked “Catholic Ministries Appeal” that was in with your regular Sunday collection envelopes and drop that into the collection baskets.

FESTIVAL 2009 – GRAND RAFFLE COMMITTEE NEEDED

Festival 2009 will be here soon, and we need a Grand Raffle Committee.  The Grand Raffle is an important part of the Festival, producing thousands of dollars in revenue for the parish.  We need 6 couples to organize ticket sales, attend the Grand Raffle party, and take shifts in the Grand Raffle booth.  Please answer the call to serve your parish this summer by joining the Grand Raffle Committee.  Just call the parish office and give us your name.

SCHOOL NEWS

DID YOU KNOW?

The students and staff at St. Vincent Ferrer School are currently collecting items for a school in Zimbabwe! This is being coordinated by our student council. We are collecting paper, pencils, pens, and other school related items, as well as clothing and other personal items. As always, cash donations are being accepted, also! Any donation can be brought to the school office or given to any of our students! Thanks for your support!

WE ARE GETTING SO CLOSE!

With your help, the St. Vincent Ferrer School junior high has currently collected 800,000+ pop tabs for Ronald McDonald House charities.  Our impressive hallway display needs only a few more filled bins to reach our goal of one million tabs. Tabs may be placed in the box in the church's entryway or dropped by the school office.  Many thanks to all who have donated and continue to donate tabs to help our campaign.

The SVF Athletic Commission is once again pleased to announce SVF Coaches Appreciation Night.  Coaches, Assistant Coaches and their spouses/guests are invited to attend an evening of fun, food and beverages at The Silverton Café on Friday, May 1st.   The event will begin at 8:00 p.m. and conclude around 11:00 p.m.  With the success of our sports teams during the 2008-2009 school year, it’s again time to thank those who volunteer their precious time to our children’s development and the various sports programs we all support.  We hope to see you there!

THANK YOU…

The Athletic Commission would like to extend a thank you to all who attended our Fish Fry events. Once again we ran the event for five consecutive Fridays.  Fortunately, we had NO snow cancellations! We would also like to thank the Boy scouts and their families for their assistance in hosting two of the evenings. Our church community makes these events enjoyable and at the same time they help the commission fund improvements to the facilities and children's sport programs.
