Countdown to the 2009 Parish Festival:

11 Weeks to go…June 26-27-28, 2006

EASTER SUNDAY

On Friday afternoon when Jesus died, the women had not bee able to finish the customary preparation for burial.  The Sabbath began at sundown on Friday, so Mary of Magdala hurried to the tomb Sunday morning to complete he task.  She found the tomb empty.  Certain that Jesus’ body had been stolen, she ran back to get the other disciples.  Peter and the other disciple also found an empty tomb but with Jesus’ clothing rolled neatly and placed where his body had been.  The disciples still didn’t understand about the resurrection and Mary wept.  As she cried, two angels appeared asking why she was crying.  She then saw a gardener and asked him where the body might be?  When he called her by name, Mary immediately recognized Jesus.

Reflection:  Most of us have discovered by now that things aren’t always, as they seem.  Secret whispers are not an attempt to hide some wrongdoing but rather an effort to plan a surprise for you.  Things weren’t, as they seemed to Mary Magdalene either that first Easter morning.  Our errors in perception often work to remind us that God’s plan is not always obvious, but that we are challenged to trust in the promise of the resurrection.

PASTOR’S DESK

EASTER WELCOME

We welcome all visitors to St. Vincent’s on Easter.  We welcome all the friends and relatives of our parishioners, “home comers” who have moved away or are home from college or the military, bereaved persons whose loved ones have died this past year, Catholics who may occasionally join us, and our neighbors who are of another faith tradition.  Happy Easter to you.

PLEASE NOTE:  All Parish Offices will be closed Easter Monday.  Also, there will be no Solemn Exposition on Monday, April 13.

LENTEN INTER-PARISH MISSION POSTLUDE

The Inter-Parish Mission with All Saints Parish this past week was a wonderful Lenten blessing for all who were able to attend.  We are very grateful to Fr. Al Bischoff for his spirit-filled preaching and joyful prayer.  Thanks, too, to all of our parishioners, the members of the Music Ministry, and our Pastoral Staff who helped to provide a warm welcome to all who attend the Mission.

THANKS FOR HELPING WITH THE PARISH MISSION RECEPTION

I wish to express my gratitude to the SVF committee of volunteers who put together the delicious and lovely reception following the closing of the Parish Mission on April 2.  Thanks also to SVF staff Linda Schmits and Karen McMichael for their assistance too.

SVF FLOWER MINISTRY

Special thanks to the SVF parishioners who delivered an Easter flower to over 50 SVF parishioners who are homebound or in nursing homes.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY KICKOFF April 4

I was able to attend the kickoff ceremony for the building of two more homes by the Eastside Coalition on Saturday April 4.  It was exciting to meet the Engelman and Cephas families who are anxious and ready to have a home.  If you can help with the build – contact SVF Habitat representative, Jean Shannon at 984-3557 or

E-mail jmshans3@yahoo.com

CATHOLIC MINISTRIES APPEAL

An important part of our Lenten alms-giving here in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati has been our participation in the Catholic Ministries Appeal.  Over the years, this appeal was known as the Archbishop’s Fund Drive and more recently, as the Archdiocesan Fund Drive.  The name change was intended to put greater emphasis on the important Archdiocesan ministries that it funds.  These include: the education of seminarians, deacons & lay pastoral ministers; Catholic Social Services; Chaplains for hospitals and prisons; College campus ministers; St. Rita School for the Deaf; and the retirement fund for diocesan priests.  The appeal began on March 14.  Information was sent through the mail to all registered parishioners.  Please make all checks payable to “Catholic Ministries Appeal” and mail them directly to the Archdiocese using the white “CMA” envelope mailed to each household or use the green envelope marked “Catholic Ministries Appeal” that was in with your regular Sunday collection envelopes and drop that into the collection baskets.

SAVE THE DATE  - MASS OF ANOINTING

Wednesday, April 22nd – 3:30 p.m.

This is an opportunity for those who are in need of healing in any way to receive the Sacrament of the Sick and to participate in a special Mass.  Our driving ministry will be available to assist those who would like to attend.  Please call Donna Piening (791-7449) if you need transportation or can provide transportation to the Mass.

FESTIVAL 2009 – GRAND RAFFLE COMMITTEE NEEDED

Festival 2009 will be here soon, and we need a Grand Raffle Committee.  The Grand Raffle is an important part of the Festival, producing thousands of dollars in revenue for the parish.  We need 8 couples to organize ticket sales, attend the Grand Raffle party, and take shifts in the Grand Raffle booth.  Please answer the call to serve your parish this summer by joining the Grand Raffle Committee.  Just call the parish office and give us your name.

FR. GEORGE’S VACATION

I will be on vacation beginning on Monday, April 13 and I will return on Sunday, April 19.  We will have Communion Services Monday through Friday at 6:30 & 8:30 a.m. in the community building Chapel.

On April 18  & 19, Fathers Michael Davis and Lou Guntzelman will celebrate Saturday confessions and the weekend Sunday Masses.

The Jelly Bean Prayer

RED is for the blood He gave.

GREEN is for the grass He made.

YELLOW is for the sun so bright.

ORANGE is for the edge of the night.

BLUE is for the water of life.

WHITE is for the grace He gave.

PURPLE is for His hour of sorrow.

PINK is for our new tomorrow.

A bag full of jellybeans

colorful and sweet,

Is a prayer, is a promise,

is a special treat.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY UDATE...

Break out those hammers... the schedule's now set for St Vincent Ferrer participation in the building of two homes on Hallwood Place in Avondale. The Casandra Engleman Family (3458 Hallwood Place), and the Jonathan and Ashley Cephas Family (3454 Hallwood Place), are the partner families for this years homes. SVF build days are scheduled for May 23rd, July 18th, September 5th and October 24th. Volunteers must be at least 15 years of age, and no skills are required. Appalachia Ministry Trip in Auxier, KY scheduled for May 11-13

A group of SVF parishioners will be going to Auxier, Kentucky to help clean and repair rural homes with Hand in Hand Ministries.  The date for this trip has been set for Monday, May 11 through Wednesday, May 13, 2009.

Last year, SVF parishioners who took part in this ministry were matched with an Auxier family of four who had lost their trailer when the father was hospitalized with chronic emphysema.  The Hand in Hand Ministries’ staff assigned jobs according to ability, and the SVF volunteers set to work helping to create additional living space off of the 2-room smokehouse in which the family was living.  After 2 ½ days of cleaning, painting and hanging drywall, a tired but deeply moved group returned to SVF, thankful for the gifts and talents God has given.

If you are interested in making this trip or have any questions about it, please contact Chris Homan at 607-5996 or by email: jhoman1@cinci.rr.com.

Paper Recycling

Bringing your paper trash to the green and yellow bins next to the school, you are supporting SJ&O activities as well as helping the environment.  We receive about $100 from Abitibi each month that we then use to sponsor mission work and to help support SVF projects.

Our paper-recycling program is doing so well – we now need two recycling bins.

Thank you!!

ALUMINUM CAN RECYCLING

St. Vincent Ferrer Parish recycles empty aluminum beverage cans.  The can recycling container is located next to the paper-recycling bin. We only accept beverage cans (soda, beer, juice) - no soup cans, sauce cans or other types of cans please.  Please make sure your cans are rinsed and completely empty before putting them in our container.

SCHOOL NEWS

DID YOU KNOW?

Report Cards for our students were distributed last Friday, April 3, 2009. We have been watching the progress of all of our children and are proud of the progress they are making. The junior high young men and women have been working extra hard to achieve our "Honor Roll" criteria. This is based on similar data to our local high schools. We believe this consistency will help them during their high school days! We have been averaging 75 to 80% of our kids making the honor roll!  They have earned at least a 3.0 average for Second Honors or a 3.5 for First Honors! Mr. Zinser, the junior high staff, and all of the SVF community are proud of our wonderful scholars!

HIGH SCHOOL THIRD QUARTER

HONOR ROLL

The following students have earned honors for the third quarter: Ursuline Academy– First Honors: Marykate Frietch, Ellen Neumann, Ariel Neumann, Hilary Pitner – Second Honors: Johanna Krogh – Freshman/Sophomore honors: Claire Barrett, Emily Duderstadt, Molly Frost, Stephanie Homan, Molly Inman, Abby Jaspers, Megan Kowalski, Anna Lapp, Rebecca Mock, Nicole Stagge. Congratulations on a job well done!  Any High School parishioner who made the honor roll needs to have their school provide us a list so your name can be included in the bulletin.

We’re still collecting and counting pop tabs!

The school junior high students are continuing their quest to reach one million pop tabs before the end of this school year.  Our current hallway display of 3/4 of a million is quite impressive!  Please drop your pop tab donations in the box in the church entry way or at the school office.  Thank you for helping us to help Ronald McDonald House Charities.

ADOPT-A PLOT COULD USE A LITTLE HELP

We have a couple of openings this season in the SVF Adopt a Plot ministry. If you are willing to help the 30 or more volunteers that care for the landscaping of our campus, we could use your help. There are several plots that need a “parent” for the season and we often need part time help to assist with special projects.

As with any task, it will be both challenging and rewarding and as much as you make of it. As chairpersons, we get most of the thanks that truly belongs to our many volunteers who for the past 4 years have made our campus a welcoming site.  If interested in learning more, give us a call.   Bob and Donna Piening 791-7449.

CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION MONTH

Steps to Safer Environments: The Archdiocese of Cincinnati mandates that adults who work with children and youth in our parishes and schools must undergo safe environment training.  It is important to know the signs of an inappropriate relationship with a child.  Programs for the safety of children and youth should be monitored.  Parents should be aware of and sensitive to what is going on in the lives of children.  Concerns should be communicated to the appropriate person in authority.  For particular assistance, please contact Fr. Joe Binzer at the Archdiocese of Cincinnati at 263-6601.

LIVE IN WEEKEND for high school juniors and seniors who are interested in pursuing the option of college seminary will be held at the Pontifical College Josephinum from April 16-18.  The Live In begins on Thursday afternoon, runs through Saturday dinner, and provides the opportunity for young men interested in the priesthood to meet current seminarians, sit in on classes, and experience the prayer life of a college seminary.  For more information, please see http://cincinnativocations.org/frm041609.php or call the Vocation Office at 421-3131 ext 2890.
