Catholic Ministries Appeal begins

SECOND SUNDAY IN LENT

The closest we can come to understanding the resurrection, is through the transfiguration of Jesus described in today’s gospel.  Only after the resurrection could the three disciples understand what they saw that day on the mountaintop.  Peter, James, and John, often described as the inner circle of disciples, went with Jesus to a mountain.  Mountains were often the places of divine revelations and the same voice that spoke at Jesus’ baptism, also spoke at the transfiguration instructing the three to listen to Jesus, God’s Son.  The disciples were confused because as yet they did not understand the resurrection.  Instead they focused on the earthly glory of Jesus and were not prepared for the suffering he predicted.

Reflection:  We see previews to many things and especially at the beginning of videos, in commercials, or at the movie theater.  Share ideas about how previews help us know what’s coming and then see how these ideas help us understand what Jesus showed his disciples in this transfiguration reading.

PRAY FOR THE ELECT

It was a real joy to celebrate the Rite of Sending Forth with our Catechumens and Candidates for Full Communion in the Church along with their sponsors last Sunday – and then to accompany them to the Cathedral for the Rite of Election.  Please keep these Candidates in your prayers as they prepare for the Easter sacraments.

THE SCRUTINIES

The Scrutinies are an integral part of the Lenten purification period for our Elect and Candidates who will be receiving the Sacraments of Initiation at the Easter Vigil.  They are celebrated on the third, fourth, and fifth Sundays of Lent.  The Scrutinies are prayers of protection and healing for the Elect and Candidates.  They raise up whatever keeps us from the transforming love of God, and they also raise up those dimensions of life that welcome the loving presence of God.

We celebrate the 1st Scrutiny Rite next Sunday (March 15) at the 9:00 a.m. Mass.  Please pray for our Elect and Candidates.

CATHOLIC MINISTRIES APPEAL

An important part of our Lenten alms-giving here in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati has been our participation in the Catholic Ministries Appeal.  Over the years, this appeal was known as the Archbishop’s Fund Drive and more recently, as the Archdiocesan Fund Drive.  The name change was intended to put greater emphasis on the important Archdiocesan ministries that it funds.  These include: the education of seminarians, deacons & lay pastoral ministers; Catholic Social Services; Chaplains for hospitals and prisons; College campus ministers; St. Rita School for the Deaf; and the retirement fund for diocesan priests.  The appeal begins on March 14.  Information will be sent through the mail to all registered parishioners.  Please make all checks payable to “Catholic Ministries Appeal” and mail them directly to the Archdiocese using the white “CMA” envelope mailed to each household or use the green envelope marked “Catholic Ministries Appeal” that was in with your regular Sunday collection envelopes and drop that into the collection baskets.

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION

Eucharistic Adoration is held every Monday following the 8:30 a.m. Mass until 5:00 p.m. in the Community Building Chapel.  At least one person must be present when the Blessed Sacrament is exposed. ST. VINCENT FOR THE POOR

Our next-door collection for our St. Vincent for the Poor society will take place March 14 & 15.  The baskets will be in the back of Church.  Your generosity is appreciated.

LET’S GET RE-FOCAS(ed)

Now that the Kenwood Kroger is re-opened, it is a good time to remind everyone how simple it is to use your FOCAS 50 Kroger card.  As you know, Kroger sends us a check every four weeks equal to 4% of the money our parishioners have loaded onto their FOCAS 50 Kroger gift cards.   This money is absolutely critical to our budget and we are very grateful to those families who regularly shop at Kroger and use their FOCAS 50 card.

Now that the Fresh Fare is open, we are hoping to see our FOCAS 50 revenues rebound so that we can get back on track with this important fundraiser.  Do you have a FOCAS 50 card?  Are you using it every time you shop at Kroger?  If you need a card, please stop by or call the parish office.  It's so easy to use, and the results really add up if lots of people participate.  Simply put money on the gift card before the cashier starts ringing up your order.  You can use cash, check or a credit or debit card to load money onto your card.  Then use the card to pay for your groceries and/or prescriptions.  That's all there is to it -- and at the end of the month, Kroger will send SVF a check.  Several times we've earned between $2,800 and $2,900 in a month.  Let's get everyone back on board and see if we can top $3,000!!

MASS CLASS - presented by Ken Gleason, SVF parishioner-Director of the Office of Evangelization and Catechesis, Archdiocese of Cincinnati

Do you have a passion for Mass?  Many Catholics who have left the Church and later returned said that the one thing that they missed more than anything else is the Eucharist.  Why?  What causes such fervor among both new and lifelong Catholics?  The answers can be found in the rituals, music and actions of the Mass itself.

If you would like to understand the parts of the Mass even better, come and join other parishioners from St. Vincent Ferrer to take a closer look at the Mass and the depth that our prayers and actions reveal.

Please come to any/all of the following sessions:

SOCIAL JUSTICE

URBAN MISSIONARIES-NAST TRINITY DINNER

On Sunday, March 1 – between 325 and 350 dinners were served at Nast Trinity Church in Over-the-Rhine by St. Vincent Ferrer parishioners.  The people that we feed were very appreciative.  A big thank you to all that helped in this outreach mission – it couldn’t be done without each of you – the cupcake bakers, the casserole makers, our great group of servers and the tireless kitchen crew.  Thanks to all of you and we hope to see you next year.  Watch for the notice in the bulletin in January 2010.  If you are interested in joining this fun filled afternoon or would like more information, please call Julie Morency at 793-3031 or Sarah Stagge 984-4081 we are always looking for more volunteers.

BROWN PAPER BAGS

The Breadrunners of SVF need paper grocery bags.  By providing the bags, you are part of a very “green” and win-win-win endeavor.

First, you are the initial user of these bags.  Second, the Breadrunners fill them with bread, and finally, the soup kitchens use them for distribution of the bread.  What a deal!

Please drop them off at Barbara Pflum’s house, 7541 Hosbrook Rd. anytime.  Thank you.

Paper Recycling

Bringing your paper trash to the green and yellow bins next to the school, you are supporting SJ&O activities as well as helping the environment.  We receive about $100 from Abitibi each month that we then use to sponsor mission work and to help support SVF projects.

Our paper-recycling program is doing so well – we now need two recycling bins.

Thank you!!

ALUMINUM CAN RECYCLING

St. Vincent Ferrer Parish recycles empty aluminum beverage cans.  The can recycling container is located next to the paper-recycling bin. We only accept beverage cans (soda, beer, juice) - no soup cans, sauce cans or other types of cans please.  Please make sure your cans are rinsed and completely empty before putting them in our container.

SCHOOL NEWS

DID YOU KNOW?

The 7th Graders at St. Vincent just held their annual "Wax Museum"! The students "performed" their historical skits for the entire student body on Wednesday, March 4, during the school day, and then re-created their famous person on Wednesday evening for the SVF parish community. Some of the "guests" on this special day were: Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Dolly Madison, Walt Disney, Princess Diana, Confucius, and over twenty other special "visitors"! The "Museum" was coordinated by Mrs. Frost, our junior high social studies teacher. Everyone enjoyed this special event!

We're still collecting and counting pop tabs!

The school junior high students are continuing their quest to reach one million pop tabs before the end of this school year.  Our current hallway display of 3/4 of a million is quite impressive!  Please drop your pop tab donations in the box in the church entry way or at the school office.  Thank you for helping us to help Ronald McDonald House Charities.

Do you buy at Gordon Food Services (GFS)?

Did you know that any purchases you make at GFS can benefit SVF? Just let them know when you check out at the register that you belong to SVF Parish and a portion of your purchases will be refunded to SVF each year in February.
