FOURTH SUNDAY IN LENT

God’s love is clearly demonstrated in this gospel reading.  Some people of Jesus’ time had shallow faith and would believe only if they saw signs of God’s power.  Jesus helped his listeners recall an event in which God instructed Moses to lift up a bronze serpent.  Anyone who looked at the snake would be cured of poisonous snakebites.  In the gesture of “lifting up” Jesus projected his own glory.  God loved the world so much that he sent his own son.  He did this to make clear to us how very much God loves us and wants to provide salvation for all of us who have failed.

Reflection:  Think of someone your family knows who might be experiencing a time of darkness and a time when it might be hard for them to understand that God really loves them.  Think together of a way your family can reach out to that person by sending a card, making a phone call, or sharing friendship with them.

PARISH LENTEN RECONCILIATION SERVICE FOR ALL SAINTS AND ST. VINCENT FERRER

The Lenten Reconciliation Service will be celebrated on Wednesday, March 25 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Vincent Ferrer Church.  Mark your calendar!  There will be five priest confessors available.

SVF/ALL SAINTS MISSION SCHEDULE

St. Vincent Ferrer and All Saints parishes will host a Mission from March 30 – April 2The presenter is Fr. Al Bischoff, who is from Xavier University in Cincinnati.

The Monday, March 30 and Wednesday, April 1 sessions will be held at All Saints; the Tuesday, March 31 and Thursday, April 2 sessions will be held at St. Vincent Ferrer.  All evening sessions will begin at 7:00 p.m.

On Tuesday, March 31 choirs from both parishes will lead us in an “Evening of Music and Reflection” at St. Vincent.  The final session on April 2 will be Mass at St. Vincent Ferrer with Fr. Al Bischoff as the homilist.

For those finding it difficult to attend an evening session, a morning session will follow the 8:30 a.m. Mass on Monday, March 30 at St. Vincent’s and there will be a morning session following the 8:30 Mass at All Saints on Wednesday, April 1.  Each morning session will be from 9:15 a.m. until 10:00 a.m.  A brochure was mailed to all SVF parishioners with information on the Mission.

CATHOLIC MINISTRIES APPEAL

An important part of our Lenten alms-giving here in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati has been our participation in the Catholic Ministries Appeal.  Over the years, this appeal was known as the Archbishop’s Fund Drive and more recently, as the Archdiocesan Fund Drive.  The name change was intended to put greater emphasis on the important Archdiocesan ministries that it funds.  These include: the education of seminarians, deacons & lay pastoral ministers; Catholic Social Services; Chaplains for hospitals and prisons; College campus ministers; St. Rita School for the Deaf; and the retirement fund for diocesan priests.  The appeal began on March 14.  Information was sent through the mail to all registered parishioners.  Please make all checks payable to “Catholic Ministries Appeal” and mail them directly to the Archdiocese using the white “CMA” envelope mailed to each household or use the green envelope marked “Catholic Ministries Appeal” that was in with your regular Sunday collection envelopes and drop that into the collection baskets.

STATIONS OF THE CROSS

This year during Lent Stations of the Cross will be on Friday evenings at 7:00 p.m.

CONSIDER ALLOWING FR. GEORGE KUNKEL TO WASH YOUR FEET AT THE HOLY THURSDAY MASS

It is always a challenge to find six women and six men who are willing to have their feet washed on Holy Thursday during Mass.  (Even St. Peter resisted Christ)  If you are willing… call Fr. George at 791-9030.  The Holy Thursday Mass is April 9 at 7:00 p.m.

SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION

On Monday, April 6th, in order to provide an additional opportunity to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation in preparation for Easter, confessions will be heard on Monday, April 6th, from 4:00-5:00 p.m. and 6:00-7:00 p.m.  There will be no confessions on Holy Saturday, April 11th

SAVE THE DATE  - MASS OF ANOINTING

Wednesday, April 22nd – 3:30 p.m.

This is an opportunity for those who are in need of healing in any way to receive the Sacrament of the Sick and to participate in a special Mass.  Our driving ministry will be available to assist those who would like to attend.  Please call Donna Piening (791-7449) if you need transportation or can provide transportation to the Mass.

THE SCRUTINIES

The Scrutinies are an integral part of the Lenten purification period for our Elect and Candidates who will be receiving the Sacraments of Initiation at the Easter Vigil.  They are celebrated on the third, fourth, and fifth Sundays of Lent.  The Scrutinies are prayers of protection and healing for the Elect and Candidates.  They raise up whatever keeps us from the transforming love of God, and they also raise up those dimensions of life that welcome the loving presence of God.

We celebrate the 3rd Scrutiny Rite on Sunday (March 29) at the 12:00 Mass.  Please pray for our Candidates.

                        -Fr. George Kunkel

ADULT FAITH FORMATION

MASS CLASS - presented by Ken Gleason, SVF parishioner-Director of the Office of Evangelization and Catechesis, Archdiocese of Cincinnati

Do you have a passion for Mass?  Many Catholics who have left the Church and later returned said that the one thing that they missed more than anything else is the Eucharist.  Why?  What causes such fervor among both new and lifelong Catholics?  The answers can be found in the rituals, music and actions of the Mass itself.

If you would like to understand the parts of the Mass even better, come and join other parishioners from St. Vincent Ferrer to take a closer look at the Mass and the depth that our prayers and actions reveal.

Please come to any/all of the following sessions:

Appalachia Ministry Trip in Auxier, KY scheduled for May 11-13

A group of SVF parishioners will be going to Auxier, Kentucky to help clean and repair rural homes with Hand in Hand Ministries.  The date for this trip has been set for Monday, May 11 through Wednesday, May 13, 2009.

Last year, SVF parishioners who took part in this ministry were matched with an Auxier family of four who had lost their trailer when the father was hospitalized with chronic emphysema.  The Hand in Hand Ministries’ staff assigned jobs according to ability, and the SVF volunteers set to work helping to create additional living space off of the 2-room smokehouse in which the family was living.  After 2 ½ days of cleaning, painting and hanging drywall, a tired but deeply moved group returned to SVF, thankful for the gifts and talents God has given.

If you are interested in making this trip or have any questions about it, please contact Chris Homan at 607-5996 or by email: jhoman1@cinci.rr.com.

BROWN PAPER BAGS

The Breadrunners of SVF need paper grocery bags.  By providing the bags, you are part of a very “green” and win-win-win endeavor.

First, you are the initial user of these bags.  Second, the Breadrunners fill them with bread, and finally, the soup kitchens use them for distribution of the bread.  What a deal!

Please drop them off at Barbara Pflum’s house, 7541 Hosbrook Rd. anytime.  Thank you.

Paper Recycling

Bringing your paper trash to the green and yellow bins next to the school, you are supporting SJ&O activities as well as helping the environment.  We receive about $100 from Abitibi each month that we then use to sponsor mission work and to help support SVF projects.

Our paper-recycling program is doing so well – we now need two recycling bins.

Thank you!!

ALUMINUM CAN RECYCLING

St. Vincent Ferrer Parish recycles empty aluminum beverage cans.  The can recycling container is located next to the paper-recycling bin. We only accept beverage cans (soda, beer, juice) - no soup cans, sauce cans or other types of cans please.  Please make sure your cans are rinsed and completely empty before putting them in our container.

SCHOOL NEWS

DID YOU KNOW?

Our seventh and eighth grade students received the Sacrament of Confirmation this past Thursday evening, here in our church. The Most Reverend Daniel Pilarczyk, Archbishop of Cincinnati, presided over this beautiful ceremony. Eighty-five young men and women from both our school and PREP program were blessed on this special night. We pray that the Lord will watch over these fine young adults and protect them in their future years!

We're still collecting and counting pop tabs!

The school junior high students are continuing their quest to reach one million pop tabs before the end of this school year.  Our current hallway display of 3/4 of a million is quite impressive!  Please drop your pop tab donations in the box in the church entry way or at the school office.  Thank you for helping us to help Ronald McDonald House Charities.
