THIRD SUNDAY IN
ORDINARY TIME
In
today’s Gospel, Jesus reads from the Scriptures, from the prophet Isaiah:
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me.” In
every age, the faith of Christians has been formed by the Word of God in
Scripture. In this age, we too,
treasure the Scriptures. So
important are the Scriptures, in fact, that they are an essential part of every
Eucharist. They form our lives as
followers of Jesus – just as they formed Jesus himself.
Living
the Word: How
is the Spirit of the Lord upon you as you begin your day?
PASTOR’S
DESK
SANCTITY
OF LIFE SUNDAY – 2nd Collection
Today
we celebrate “Sanctity of Life Sunday”.
We ask that you remember the Lord’s Little Ones on this special day.
St. Vincent’s will have a second collection for the Pregnancy Center
East. The collection being taken
will support the ministry done at the Pregnancy Center East, a center that
offers women alternatives to abortion. They
offer free confidential pregnancy tests, counseling, adoption information,
infant clothes and diapers – and a variety of other services. The Center has a
24-hour Help Line, 321-3100 and is located in the Hyde Park Medical Arts
Building, suite 11 at 2752 Erie Avenue. Thank
you for your financial and spiritual support.
FR.
GEORGE OFFERS A STATE OF THE PARISH ADDRESS
Fr. George is sending a letter and pledge card to all SVF Parishioners. Please complete and return the pledge card at your earliest convenience thru the mail, collection basket or Parish Office. As we begin a new calendar year Fr. George will offer a “State of the Parish Address” at all the Masses on January 27 & 28.
SACRAMENT
OF RECONCILIATION FOR 5TH AND 6TH GRADE PREP STUDENTS
On
Sunday January 14, with the assistance of Sr. Kaye, Karen Imhoff and Jeanne and
Ray Geers, I was able to pray with the 5th and 6th graders
in PREP and offer them the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
PRESENTATION
OF THE LORD – CANDLEMASS DAY
Friday February 2nd the liturgy celebrates Jesus being presented in the temple by Mary and Joseph forty days after his birth. It was during this ceremony of dedication and blessing that the prophet Simeon declared that Jesus was to be “a light of revelation for all people.” Because of this reference to Jesus as “the light of the world”, the Church in the Middle Ages began to bless candles on this day and February 2nd became known as Candlemas Day. (My apologies to the ground hog!) As part of our 9:10 am Mass on Friday, we will bless the candles and votive lights that we will use in our liturgical celebrations throughout the year.
FEAST OF ST. BLAISE
Saturday February 3rd is the feast of St. Blaise who was a bishop in the fourth century. According to an ancient legend, be blessed a young boy who was choking on a fish bone. The youth recovered and after Bishop Blaise died he was proclaimed patron of those suffering from diseases of the throat. We will celebrate the Blessing of Throats at the 5:00 p.m. Mass on Saturday, February 3.
BAPTISMS IN LENT
The season of Lent is just about a month away. In order to use those forty days as a time of prayer and fasting to prepare for the celebration of the Easter sacraments with our Catechumens and Candidates, we do not plan to schedule any baptisms during Lent (February 21 thru April 4th) except in cases of an emergency or pastoral necessity. We are looking forward to celebrating the living waters of baptism with the new members of our faith community throughout the Easter season.
-Fr. George Kunkel
IN MEMORIAM
Your prayers are requested for the soul of Jane Gruber whose Mass of Christian Burial was held January 19.
VOCATION VIEW
Through the power of the Spirit Jesus proclaimed his mission. How are you carrying on that mission today? Ponder the possibility of being a deacon, priest, brother or sister.
(Luke 1: 1, 4:14-21)

Motherhood in the
Balance
Children,
Career, Me, and God
By:
Catherine M. Wallace
Library
Code: Parenting
For women today, especially mothers, life is a balancing act. Society urges women to claim equal rights, to climb the corporate ladder, and to achieve their full potential. At the same time it expects women to live up to traditional role expectations.
In Motherhood in the Balance, Wallace recounts the ordinary struggles of a woman trying to juggle the demands of her career with the needs of her children, and the relationship with her husband. She discovers that through the unfailing love of God we all can discover what we are called to be, figure out what we should do with our lives, and thereby learn how to live with the chaos.
SOCIAL
JUSTICE AND OUTREACH
Do
You Work D O W N T O W N?
Breadrunners
is calling on parishioners that regularly drive downtown. We are in
desperate need of volunteers to stop by Kroger and Bonnie Lynn Bakery, pick
up day-old bread and drop it off at a location in downtown Cincinnati (TBD
to meet your schedule). If this is something you can fit into your commute
to work once a week, you would be providing a great service to the hungry
people of Cincinnati and Breadrunners would be happy to hear from you!
Please call Marley Belair at 792- 0110 or 328-6022
