27th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

The Apostles ask Jesus to increase their faith.  In response, Jesus first explains how powerful faith can be – faith no bigger than a tiny mustard seed is strong enough to uproot a tree and carry it off to be planted in the sea.  Next, Jesus tells a story about duty.  If we have faith in God, we realize what an honor, privilege, and joy it is to do the work of God in sharing love and peace with others.  On Pentecost, the Apostles find the increase of faith they ask for in today’s Gospel.  Today, we model our faith and courage after the Apostles.  We believe in Jesus and serve him faithfully.

Prayer Moment: May my faith grow strong, Jesus, as I share it with my family & friends – as your Apostles shared their faith in you with your disciples in the early Church.

PASTOR’S DESK

CATHOLIC MINISTERIES APPEAL

CMA is an annual effort by the Archdiocese of Cincinnati to spread the Gospel through informing and engaging the faithful with important regional ministries that benefit thousands of people throughout nineteen counties in western and southwestern Ohio.  We invite you to share your gifts of time, talent, and treasure to participate in the life of our local church through these ministries.  Next weekend we will have a very short survey card for all parishioners to fill out.  You will be asked to mark the ministry you would most like to learn about over the next few months. We will tabulate the results, and have information in our bulletins so you have increased opportunities to learn about – and maybe participate in – one of these important ministries.

OCTOBER COUNT

During the month of October, the Archdiocese of Cincinnati requires each parish to keep a count of the number of parishioners attending Sunday Mass.  Thanks to all of our Ushers for helping to keep an accurate October Count again this year beginning on October 6 & 7 weekend.

RESPECT LIFE SUNDAY

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has designated October 7th as National Respect Life Sunday.  So often our society is openly hostile to life.  On any given day the headlines tell of countless acts of violence, murders and abuse.  This observance takes on special meaning in light of the many abortions and terrorist attacks that have taken place throughout the world these last number of years.  More than ever, we as Christians are called to be the prophetic voices who speak out – defending the sacredness of life in all of its dimensions.  May we never forget that all life is a gift from God.

BINGO AT ST. VINCENT FERRER WILL RETURN ON SUNDAY AFTERNOON OCTOBER 7

Doors open at 12:30 p.m.; instants are sold at 1:00 p.m.; first Bingo game begins at 1:30 p.m.; Bingo will end by 5:00 p.m.

CAN YOU HELP COUNT BINGO "INSTANTS"

The parish needs 2-3 additional volunteers to count bingo "instants.” This will be at the parish, during the week, and at your leisure, but we would like a weekly, or bi-weekly commitment. It's a sitting job, and would be fun to do with a friend, or daughter/son. Please contact Debbie Kamp for more information at 891-4168, or dlkamp@zoomtown.com

The Spirit of God makes us strong, loving and wise.  How will you use these gifts to serve the gospel?  Consider being a sister, brother, priest or deacon. (2 Timothy 1:6-8, 13-14)

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

EUCHARISTIC SUNDAY I will be celebrated

Next Sunday, October 14th, at the 10:30 AM Mass.  The children of the parish who will be preparing to receive First Eucharist will be formally enrolled as candidates.  Eucharistic Sunday celebrations are special events and important in the child’s preparation.  Through the theme “We Belong” the children will recall their baptism as they, along with their parents, formalize their commitment to prepare intently for First Eucharist.

Our membership in the Christian community is both a privilege and a responsibility.  How are we as a parish witnessing the Holy Spirit’s presence to others?

THANKSGIVING /CHRISTMAS TURKEY

It doesn’t seem possible, but the holidays are coming soon – Thanksgiving and Christmas.  Once again, we are going to provide the turkey and gravy for each holiday dinner at the St. Francis Soup Kitchen and Our Daily Bread. Letters have been sent to all those who helped last year.  If you wish to join us, it is simple –

1.       Cook turkey; cut all meat off the bones.  Wrap white and dark meat together and freeze.  Save ALL drippings.  STRAIN and freeze also in a throwaway container.  I realize that many people are sure that giblets-gravy is best, but with the amount we have to make, it is too difficult;

2.       Buy a turkey and someone else will cook it for you;

3.       Volunteer to cook a donated turkey; or

4.       Donate one (check made payable to the Parish) to purchase a turkey.

If you have any further questions call Barbara Pflum at 891-8287

If you are interested in participating or helping to plan this trip please contact Chris Homan at 607-5996 or Connie Dunn at 791-7506.

SCHOOL NEWS

Did You Know??

Our Catholic Identity Goal for this school year is: Our students will exhibit behavior in line with our Christian values and teachings. We have placed a "Jesus Jar" in each of our classrooms to collect names of our students who behave like "Jesus would". A child receives a "ticket" that goes in the jar when they are "caught" doing something good. Things like helping someone in need, doing a special "service project", or other Christian actions are what we are looking for. All of these students will be recognized at the end of each month.  Please feel free to contact Mr. Z. at school when you see these Christ-like behaviors being practiced by one of our students.

ARTS & CRAFT FAIR

Know any crafters?  The St. Vincent Ferrer PTO still has booths available for its 24th annual Arts & Crafts Fair on November 17.  Booth prices range from $40-$55.  Please call Maria Barrett for more information (891-7699).
