29th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Unable to shed their understanding of hierarchy, the disciples continued to wonder who would be first in Jesus’ Kingdom.  Some disciples wondered where they would sit, in what order they would enter, and who would be greatest.  In today’s gospel, Zebedee’s sons, James and John were wondering about such things.  As he had before, Jesus tried to get the point across that order in God’s Kingdom was unlike the order found in this world.  In order to be first in the Kingdom of God, a person needed to serve others.  Jesus gave the disciples an example of this service, but still they did not comprehend the message.

Reflection:  Make plans to serve someone else.  Think of someone you know whose load is heavy right now.  Maybe you know an elderly person in your neighborhood who might like to join you for dinner, or go for a ride.  Perhaps there is someone sick or in a nursing home who would enjoy a visit from you.  Try to live this gospel on a regular basis.  Each time you serve one person, think about what you will do next as a servant of God.

PASTOR’S DESK

WORLD MISSION SUNDAY

Sunday, October 18, is World Mission Sunday.  We celebrate the gift of faith and recommit ourselves to sharing that faith with others.  We offer our prayers and sacrifices for the Church’s worldwide mission.  Please be generous in helping in the collection for the Propagation of the Faith.

ALL SAINTS DAY

Sunday, November 1st is the Feast of All Saints. At times the lives of many of the canonized Saints may seem a bit distant or remote from our everyday experiences and situations.  All Saints Day gives us the opportunity to honor the unsung heroes and heroines of our Catholic heritage – the men and women in our families and circle of friends who lived good and loving lives and are now with the Lord in heaven

ALL SOULS DAY MEMORIAL MASS

Our annual Memorial Mass for the Faithful Departed will be celebrated on All Souls Day, Monday November 2nd at 7:00 p.m.  We will remember in particular all of our parishioners who have died since last November, as well as those members of our local community whose funeral services were held here at St. Vincent’s.  As part of our ritual of remembering, their names will be prayerfully read and a candle symbolizing the light of their eternal life will be presented to a family member or friend who is present.

Next weekend, October 24/25, you are invited to inscribe the names of your beloved dead in the register at the rear of the Church.  Each of these loved ones, along with all the faithful departed will have a prominent place in our prayers throughout the month of November.

OCTOBER COUNT

During the month of October, the Archdiocese of Cincinnati requires each parish to keep a count of the number of parishioners attending Sunday Mass.  Thanks to all of our Ushers for helping to keep an accurate October Count again this year.

WAYS TO ENHANCE YOUR PARTICIPATION IN THE SUNDAY LITURGY

Be more aware of God’s presence within the silence during Mass.  Be attentive during times of silence; listen to God’s voice within you.

-Fr. George Kunkel

IN MEMORIAM

Your prayers are requested for the soul of Chris Hanley, son of Audrey Hanley, who died October 10th.

CONGRATULATIONS

To Dick & Betty Hiernaux as they celebrate their 50th Wedding Anniversary at the 5:00 p.m. Mass on Saturday, October 24.

BAPTISM

Please welcome the newest member of our faith community: Chad Michael Perkins, son of Michael & Lori Perkins, who was recently baptized.  Congratulations to the proud parents!

VOCATION VIEW

Whoever wants to be great must serve others.  Who are the ones you consider “great?”  What can you do to carry on their legacy?  (Mark 10:35-45)

YEAR FOR PRIESTS

This year is an invitation to support, encourage and pray for all priests.  Each week we will publish the names of 7 of our diocesan priests to pray for in particular.  Hopefully by the end of the year we will have prayed for all of our priests and seminarians in a special way.  This week's priests are:

 Sunday             Fr. Gerald Haemmerle

 Monday             Fr. Ronald Haft

 Tuesday            Fr. Terence Hamilton

 Wednesday       Fr. Robert Hater

 Thursday           Fr. W. Michael Hay

 Friday               Fr. David Heinl

 Saturday           Fr. Peter Helmlinger

THANKSGIVING & CHRISTMAS

TURKEY DINNERS

It doesn’t seem possible, but the holidays are coming soon – Thanksgiving and Christmas.  Once again, we are going to provide the turkey and gravy for each holiday dinner at Our Daily Bread (near Findlay Market) and the Over the Rhine Soup Kitchen (Liberty & Vine). These dinners have been a service of our parish for almost 20 years.  If you wish to join with us, there are four alternatives:

1.       Cook turkey; cut all meat off the bones.  Wrap white and dark meat together and freeze.  Save ALL drippings.  STRAIN and freeze, place in a throwaway container. You can make your own gravy or someone else will make the gravy.

2.       Buy a turkey and someone else will cook it for you.

3.       Volunteer to cook a donated turkey; or

4.       Donate a check, made payable to the parish, which will be used to purchase a turkey.

If you have any further questions call Barbara Pflum at 891-8287.  Thank you for your help.

We are praying that, with God's help, this groundbreaking effort will mark the beginning of the end of abortion in our city -- and throughout America.  While all aspects of 40 Days for Life are crucial in our effort to end abortion, the most visible component is the peaceful prayer vigil outside of abortion clinics and Planned Parenthood facilities. PUBLIC LECTURE

At 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 21, Rev. Pablo Gadenz STD will speak on the topic "The Scriptures, St. Paul, and Jewish Methods of Exegesis" in the Bartlett Pastoral Center at The Athenaeum of Ohio/Mount St. Mary's Seminary.
The New Testament frequently refers to the Jewish Scriptures, using both citations and allusions.  In particular, St. Paul in his letters not only refers to the Jewish Scriptures in such ways, but also employs Jewish methods of exegesis, such as the rule of gezerah shawah, to interpret the Scriptures.  In light of the recent celebration in the Catholic Church of a special Pauline Year, this lecture will focus on examples from Paul’s Letter to the Romans which highlight the decisive authority that the Scriptures have in Paul’s arguments and which illustrate his use of Jewish methods of exegesis.
Fr. Gadenz is Assistant Professor of Biblical Studies at Seton Hall University, Immaculate Conception Seminary School of Theology.

  All are welcome to attend.
