My first school year at Saint
Vincent Ferrer School is coming to a close. I feel incredibly
fortunate to have had this year to build a foundation for our
continuous growth. I also feel blessed to have met and spend each
day with a fabulous group of students and educators. I sincerely
love working with the SVF staff and I am already looking forward to
coming back to school in August.
Being a reflective man by nature I cannot help
to wonder, what will I think about this summer?
First, I will continue to examine our adventure
as an excellent faith-filled school.
I will continue to work with our staff to
assure we personalize our work with students by building strong and
trusting Christian relationships. It is the strength of these
relationships that determine to success or failure of SVF.
Second, I will continue to think about why
people get into this profession and how we can keep our ideals alive
in our students. Where so many schools focus their efforts on test
scores, we see the importance of building a foundation of academics
and Christian values. As Catholic educators we understand that we
not only educate the mind but also the heart.
Third, I will continue to promote the
cultivation and assessment of learning skills that are not covered
on any test. As Antoine De Saint-Exupery, author of The Little
Prince, claims, “the essential things are not always seen.”
Fostering creativity and imagination in all aspects of our students’
lives are some of the essential things. Children must be taught to
be courageous, and passionate about their studies and their faith.
Education and compliance are contrary. Taking standpoints and
learning to defend those positions are fundamental to the depth of
student knowledge.
These thoughts will keep me company this
summer.
Before the final weeks’ hectic schedule gets
the best of my time I wish to say thanks for the relationships
foster and the opportunity to work with such loving families and
staff this first year. I look forward to many years of working and
growing together.
Peace,
Douglas L. Alpiger
